INTRODUCTION
1. Propose Building
This project involves the planning and structural design of a proposed multi-storey
reinforced concrete building to be constructed in Johor Bahru, Johor, as an extension
project for Kompleks Penyayang Kempas. The project is carried out as part of the
Reinforced Concrete Design course to provide students with practical exposure to structural
design applications and the implementation of engineering principles based on Eurocode
and Malaysian Standards.
The structural system selected for the building is reinforced concrete due to its strength,
durability, fire resistance, and suitability for multi-storey construction. The building is also
provided with essential facilities such as staircases, lift systems, AHU rooms, ELV rooms,
and switch rooms to ensure efficient building operation and accessibility. The design
calculations carried out in this project include the determination of permanent loads,
variable loads, wind loads, load combinations, and the design of structural elements such
as slabs, staircases, columns, and foundations. All design actions are evaluated in
accordance with BS EN 1990:2002+A1:2005, BS EN 1991-1-1:2002, BS EN 1992-1-
1:2004, and MS 1553:2002.
Overall, this project aims to enhance students understanding of reinforced concrete
structural behaviour, design standards, load assessment procedures, and structural detailing.
The project also provides valuable experience in applying engineering knowledge and
professional practices to the design of a realistic multi-storey building structure.
The main structural members consist of beams, slabs, and columns. The primary beam
size adopted is 250 mm × 600 mm, secondary beam size is 150 mm × 350 mm.
Longitudinal reinforcement bars of 12 mm diameter and links of 8 mm diameter are used
for the beam design. For slab thickness of 175 mm is provided with 10 mm diameter
reinforcement bars and 8 mm diameter links. The column size adopted throughout the
structure is 400 mm × 300 mm with 16 mm diameter main reinforcement bars and 8 mm
diameter links.
The building is analysed as an unbraced frame structure. The average roof height is 12.0
m, with a floor-to-floor height of 3.0 m from the ground floor to the roof level. The project
site is located in Johor Bahru, which falls under Wind Zone 1 according to MS 1553:2002.
The surrounding environment is classified as suburban terrain, and the mode shape factor,
𝑘, is taken as 1.0 for wind load analysis.

CONCLUSION
This project focused on the structural design of a proposed multi-storey reinforced concrete
building for the extension development of Kompleks Penyayang Kempas, Johor Bahru.
The design process involved the analysis and design of major structural components,
including slabs, staircases, beams, columns, and foundations. Each structural element was
carefully designed to ensure adequate strength, stability, serviceability, and safety under the
applied loading conditions. The project was carried out in accordance with Eurocode and
Malaysian Standards to ensure compliance with current engineering requirements and
professional practices.
Throughout the project, design actions such as permanent loads, variable loads, and wind
loads were determined and applied using appropriate load combinations. Structural analysis
was conducted to evaluate the behaviour of the building and to verify the adequacy of the
selected structural members. Material specifications, member dimensions, reinforcement
details, and foundation requirements were selected based on design calculations and
engineering judgement to achieve an efficient and economical structural system.
The project also provided valuable practical experience in applying reinforced concrete
design principles and structural analysis techniques. The use of design standards, manual
calculations, and engineering software enhanced the accuracy and reliability of the design
process. In addition, the preparation of structural layouts, detailing drawings, and design
calculations improved understanding of the relationship between structural behaviour and
practical construction requirements.
In conclusion, the proposed building has been successfully designed to satisfy the
requirements of safety, durability, functionality, and structural performance. The project has
strengthened the understanding of reinforced concrete design and provided valuable
knowledge and skills that can be applied in future civil engineering projects and
professional practice.
