ABSTRACT
ii
An essential component of development and health is nutrient and nutrition. Without lowering
the risk of non-communicable illnesses, improved nutrition is associated with better health
outcomes for mothers, babies, and kids as well as a stronger immune system during safer
pregnancies and deliveries. The infant mortality rate dropped by 1.2 per 1,000 live births (-
2.71%) from the previous year, according to the Timor Leste Demographic Health Survey
statistics. Consequently, in 2021, Timor-Leste's infant mortality rate dropped to 43.1 deaths per
1,000 live births, its lowest level ever. If an infant is given enough food and nourishment, they
will develop into a robust, healthy child with ideal brain development, which will make them
intelligent. Since feeding newborns and toddlers plays such a significant role in their
development, it is imperative to meet their nutritional demands in accordance with their age.

INTRODUCTION
Nutrients play a crucial role in children’s growth and development. Adequate balanced intake of
nutrients is essential for maintaining health, supporting physical and mental development as well
as influencing social behaviour. Food has always been one of the requirements for the survival of
any living organism with mankind not an exception. Feeding means to provide the body with the
nutrients it needs for growth, development, and energy. Thus, food is what the body absorbs, it is
also the act of consuming nutrition. It is among the essentials of life. Individuals engage in a
variety of jobs to put food on the table. Food is necessary for human survival because of this,
every living thing that consumes food experiences distinctly different levels of growth and
development in each individual. Contrary to what one might have predicted, growth and
development are not uniform. The explanation behind this is that, the kind of food a person
consumes affects how quickly they grow and develop. Some people are tall, short, obese, skinny,
and so on for this reason. Undoubtedly, genetics contributes to an individual's growth and
development to some extent, but dietary habits have a bigger impact.
The evolution of humans provides evidence for this.
Nutrition is the capacity for healthy eating. It also referred to as a balanced diet, is the capacity to
choose foods that promote overall wellbeing and good health among the many dietary groups.
Healthy eating encourages human growth and development, which is the expansion of each
person's physical and psychological components. Nutrition is the study of how our body
responds to the food and beverages we consume in connection to a balanced diet that nourishes
the body, repairs damaged cells and gives it energy, according to Sharma (2017). While
Nutrients are important substances which are considered necessary for metabolism, growth and
maintaining proper body functions. Boutayeb (2010), children who are malnourished face an
increased risk of infectious diseases, which impedes their ability to engage in educational
activities. Every essential vitamin in the right amounts from the foods you choose makes up a
balanced diet. While an unhealthy diet raises the danger of catching infectious diseases, inhibits
growth and development, and causes psychological issues like mental health disorders, a
nutritious diet encourages healthy living and offers protection against infectious diseases.
Nutrient intake in children appears to be important since it may affect their mental health, which
in turn has a negative impact on their overall wellness. All people require appropriate nutrients
1
for the body's overall growth, but due to their fragility and sensitivity, some people such as
youngsters, pregnant women, and nursing mothers need these nutrients more than others
(Ogwudire-Chukwudire, 2004). The study underlined that at this critical moment, remarkable
nutrients are needed to ensure proper development and maintenance. Lack of the proper
nutrients, in the wrong kinds and amounts, can create illnesses in children that can worsen their
psychological condition or even kill them. Most parents are too poor to provide their children
with a balanced diet, so they give them anything that can lead to anaemia. This explains the
increased newborn death rates among poor socioeconomic families. In a similar vein, Nwankwo
(2007) discussed the extrinsic factors that impact learning and intellectual development and
mentioned a detrimental prenatal environment, which the experts stated included poor nutrition.
Supportively, the results of the Timor Leste Demographic Health Survey showed that the infant
mortality rate in Timor-Leste decreased by 1.2 per 1,000 live births (-2.71%) from the previous
year, and it reached its lowest figure in 2021 with 43.1 deaths per 1,000 live births. In particular,
infant mortality rates have continued to decline. Based on reports from basic health research,
nutritional problems are quite high in Indonesia, namely 19.6% in 2013 and increased from the
previous year. (RISKESDAS, 2013). The percentage of newborns that do not live through their
first 12 months of life is known as the infant mortality rate. This includes neonatal deaths, which
are defined as deaths that occur within the first 28 days of life, and is commonly given as a
number per 1,000 live births. Stunting: Among children under five, the prevalence of stunting
(short for age), wasting (thin versus tall), and overweight (6%), respectively, is 46%. 50% of
infants younger than six months old exclusively breastfeed. Minimum acceptable diet: 13% of
infants between the ages of 6 and 23 months are fed a minimum acceptable diet. 40 percent of
children aged 6 to 59, 23 percent of women aged 15 to 49, and 13 percent of males aged 15 to 49
experience anaemia. Iodized salt: Iodine is found in salt in the majority of homes (85%). Adults'
nutritional status: Between the ages of 15 and 49, 25% of men and 27% of women are
underweight. According to the TLDHS, 23% of children under the age of five are severely
stunted, while 46% of children under the age of five are stunted. Ten percent of children are
severely wasted, and twenty-four percent of children are wasted. Children under the age of forty
are underweight. According to the MoH (2016), 6% of youngsters are overweight.

Concept Nutrient/Nutrition
A nutritious diet is the best way to receive nutrients, which are chemical components that the
body needs to maintain basic activities (Alyssa & Shamim, 2023). Contrarily, nutrition is
concerned with the kinds of food and beverages we consume. When food or drink falls within a
reasonable range in terms of both quality and quantity, it goes one step further to examine
appropriate nutrition. When the amount consumed is out of proportion, it is equivalent to
inadequate nutrition, which is harmful to overall health. In line with the aforementioned
assertion, Ogwudire-Chukwudire (2004) stated that nutrition is the study of the various foods
that humans eat and their physiological effects, referencing Stare and McWilliams (1977). It
goes without saying that every food type has unique nutritional value and, depending on how
they are combined in the right amounts, each one has a different effect on the body's metabolism
and overall welfare.
7
According to scholars, water, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates are the six
main groups of nutrients that are vital to human health. According to Alyssa & Shamim (2023),
macronutrients include proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. Large amounts of water are needed,
yet they don't provide energy. Minerals and vitamins are regarded as micronutrients and are vital
to metabolism. Vitamins are organic micronutrients that fall into one of two categories: fat- or
water-soluble. The water-soluble vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12, and C are among
the necessary vitamins. The fat-soluble vitamins A, E, D, and K are necessary. Inorganic
micronutrients are minerals. There are two types of minerals: macrominerals and microminerals.
Macrominerals, which contain calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and
chloride, are needed in doses more than 100 mg daily. Other electrolytes include sodium,
potassium, and chloride. Microminerals, which include iron, copper, zinc, selenium, and iodine
are nutrients that are needed in doses less than 100 mg daily.
Classes of Nutrition/Nutrient
Good nutrition fortifies the body system’s immunity against some ailments. It helps to make a
healthy living when subjected to balance diet. Balanced diet is the food that contains all the
classes of food in a proper proportion. Oma (2020) espoused that there are six classes of food
namely: Carbohydrates, fats and oil, protein, vitamins, mineral, water.
8
Starches like amylose, which are present in grains, legumes, and starchy vegetables, are
composed of glycogen monomers. Glycogen, which is mostly absent from the diet but is present
in the muscle and liver, is how animals store glucose. Plant polysaccharides called fibres, which
include cellulose and pectin, are indigestible to humans and can be found non whole grains,
fruits, vegetables, and legumes. Nonetheless, they are important for gut health and function and
can be broken down by the large intestine's microbiota (Cummings & Stephen, 2007). Based on
the minimal amount of glucose needed for brain function, carbs should account for 45 to 65% of
calorie intake for healthy children and adults. The amount of fibre that has been shown in studies
to reduce the risk of coronary artery disease is greater than 38 g for men and 25 g for women.
There are some carbs that are higher in nutrients than others. The best sources of carbohydrates
are added sugar, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains that are high in fibre and nutrients.
Optimal carbohydrate intake consists of fiber-rich, nutrient-dense whole grains, fruits,
vegetables, legumes, and added sugar (Trumbo, Schlicker, Yates & Poos, 2002).
Protein: Protein is a type of nutritious ingredient that may be found in both plants and animals.
For example, it can be found in fish, eggs, beans, and snails, among other foods. It helps children
grow and develop. In adults, it is also in charge of creating new tissues and mending deteriorated
ones. Additionally, it helps the body produce hormones and enzymes. Anaemia, kwashiorkor,
and stunted growth and development are all brought on by a lack of protein.
Additionally, Proteins are vital macronutrients that support the body's structure and mechanics,
control cellular and physiological functions, and supply energy when needed. Amino acids make
up proteins, which can be found in foods such as grains, meats, dairy products, legumes, and
[Link] kilocalories are found in one gramme of protein (Trumbo, Schlicker, Yates &
Poos, 2002). It is advised to consume 0.8 to 1 gramme of protein per kilogramme of body weight
per day. Based on the sufficient quantity required for nitrogen balance, healthy children and
adults ages 1 to 3, 4 to 18, and 5 to 20%, 10 to 30%, and 10 to 35% of daily calorie intake,
should, correspondingly, come from protein.
Fat and Oil: Fats and oil: Basically, fats originate from animals, whilst oil is produced by plants.
Vegetables, groundnuts, palm fruits, etc. are possible sources of fats and oil. In addition to
storing and transferring vitamin A, D, E, and K into fat, these nutrients give the body heat and
9
energy. Foods high in fat take longer to digest, which keeps hunger panting. Additionally, they
contribute to the skin's smoothness. When it's lacking, the body malfunctions, the skin becomes
dry, and energy levels drop.
Mineral Salt: The body need mineral salt for healthy development and metabolism regulation.
Green vegetables, eggs, liver, beans, seafood, calcium, fruits, coconuts, and so on are examples
of foods that contain mineral salt. Mineral salt is necessary for healthy development, the
production of strong bones and teeth and the production of haemoglobin, blood clothing, and the
thyroid gland's normal operation. Absence of it causes anaemia, fatigue, goitre, weak bones and
teeth, cramping in the muscles, and other problems.
Vitamins: Vitamins are essential nutrients that the body needs to maintain its health. There are
two kinds of vitamins: fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K) and water-soluble vitamins
(B and C). Carrots, liver, salmon, vegetables, butter, eggs, and palm oil are a few examples of
foods high in vitamins. Vitamins promote healthy growth, the development of teeth and bones,
clear vision, healthy skin, and shiny hair. A vitamin B12 deficiency causes night blindness,
gastrointestinal problems, ill skin and hair, and blurred vision.
Water: Water, which is made up of hydrogen and water, is essential for proper digestion and
absorption, controlling body temperature, reproduction, and the movement of food, oxygen, and
other chemicals throughout the body. It also enhances brain function (Ferreira,
2020).Dehydration results from a lack of water in the body, which causes all of the body's
systems to malfunction.
Furthermore, macronutrients and micronutrients are the two categories of nutrients that Ferreira
(2020) recognised. Dietary building blocks for the body are called macronutrients, and they
include foods like fat, carbs, and protein that must be consumed in large quantities. Both of them
supply the body with the energy it needs to operate. Conversely, vitamins and minerals that must
be consumed in small amounts are known as micronutrients.
However, in any living thing, appropriate growth and development are a result of optimal
nutrition. Determining what growth and development entail is therefore essential.
[Link] (2019) likewise defined human growth and development as a kid's increase
10
in size and development as the process through which a child acquires psychomotor skills. The
scholar recognized four stages of human grow and development. As under listed;
11
a) the principle of common direction of growth/development; the head of the embryo develops
its shape first and before other parts and does not change so much after birth;
b) the principle of common direction of growth/development; this is the principle of continuity
which implies that the life of an individual is divided into infancy (from birth to five years),
later childhood (from five to twelve years), adolescence (from twelve to eighteen years and
beyond).
c) the principle of sequential development; growth and development occur in systematic order
in which case it comes one after the other. The child sits first before standing, teething also
follows the same sequence and many others;
d) the principle of maturation and readiness: Natures first mature the child’s muscles and nerves
needed to carry out some function. Persuasion no matter what level could make a child
perform a task the child is not ready and matured for;
e) the principle of developmental pace; Infancy is a period of accelerated growth. During the
pre-school period, the growth is slacked which is known as the period of decelerated growth.
Even at this period, there are still noticeable changes in the body which include mental,
affection and emotional. The onset of adolescence witnessed a spurt of growth in height
which is evinced by accelerated growth before it tappers off to adult level;
f) the principle of individual differences; this is hinged on the genetic and environmental
factors. Children pick up at different stages of their life some faster than the others, be it
growing of teeth, sitting, walking and others aspects. During puberty, some develop more
than the others both for boys and girls;
g) differing rates of growth; different aspects of growth do not maintain uniform pace of
development all the time. At this point, a great deal of energy is being used, which could
cause the baby who is having trouble learning new words to struggle longer. Academic
achievement may also be impacted because of the amount of energy required to reach certain
developmental milestones in adolescence. Different body parts develop at different rates.
12
creates complex neural pathways at an unprecedented speed. By six years, the brain has
developed to 90% of adult size (Oguegbu, 2020).
Due to the fragile nature of children, adverse conditions in the child's environment could
jeopardise the child's realisation of their full potential. It is a critical period of great opportunity,
but good early childhood development will have a direct positive impact on a child's long-term
health outcomes and will improve future opportunities, school attainment, and even earning
potentials. Adverse effects on a child's early development can have long-term effects, negatively
affecting intergenerational poverty, adult mental and physical health, school readiness and
learning potential, resistance to stress, and resource resolution. However, with the right help and
interventions, recovery is achievable. Long-term benefits will accrue from funding child
development programmes and initiatives since children who receive sufficient assistance
throughout their formative years go on to lead healthier, more educated lives and are more likely
to make significant contributions to society and the global economy.
A vital component of growth and wellness is nutrition. In addition to strengthening the immune
system during safer pregnancies and deliveries, improved nutrition is associated with better
health outcomes for moms, babies, and kids. However, it does not lower the risk of non-
communicable diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which cause healthy children to
learn better and live longer (WHO, 2023). The two most crucial nutrient kinds are calcium and
vitamin D since the majority of the body's bone mass builds throughout infancy and adolescence.
Similarly, as these nutrients are necessary for healthy and appropriate growth, iron and protein
are also crucial for the development of toddlers and teenagers (WHO, 2019). Because
nutritionally associated health issues are indicators of low-quality human resources, which in
turn affects how well the country's potential is developed (Ayustaningwarno, 2018).
Similarly, the future quality of Human Resources (HR) is determined by the calibre of today's
kids. As a result, the growth of today's youth must be the starting point for future human
progress. Children must be prepared to grow and develop to the best of their potential in order to
produce quality human resources in the future. (Dinda, 2018) Giving your child a good diet can
help them develop into strong, healthy adults with excellent brain development, which will make
them brilliant. Given the critical role that nutrition plays in the development of infants and
13
toddlers, it is imperative that their nutritional demands be met in accordance with their age.
According to Astati (2018).
There are two main elements that affect human growth and development: internal influences and
external factors. Genes, race, and gender are examples of internal elements that originate from
within the human body; on the other hand, environmental, stimulatory, social, economic, and
nutritional influences originate from the outside world. The body needs nutrients in order to
grow and thrive. It is a basic necessity. Everybody has different nutritional demands based on
their age, gender, and level of exercise. Young children require higher nutritional intake than
adults do; their nutritional needs are different. Toddlers are still in the growth and development
stage, which explains this. Early childhood is sometimes referred to as the preschool years since
it is at this time that children start to develop their five senses and numerous motor reflexes,
preparing them for the next level of schooling basic education. In addition, youngsters start
learning about a variety of topics in their surroundings from a young age. Nutritious eating must
be paired with a high level of interest and physical exercise. (Dyah, 2018).
In summary, a variety of factors, including hormonal, genetic, and environmental ones, affect a
child's growth and development. Postnatal environmental influences, including but not limited to
socioeconomic situation, nutrition, health status, and inadequate early stimulation, can have an
impact on impaired growth and development in children. A child's lifelong effects on foetal
development can begin in the early stages of pregnancy and continue throughout. Small children
who are underweight and have stunted growth are signs of chronic malnutrition from which
recovery will take a long time. On the other hand, youngsters who are wasting indicate a
transient starvation that will eventually improve (Pareyowari , 2014)
14
Rumahorbo, 2020). Thus, the government's efforts to combat malnutrition and ensure
community nutrition are crucial. These efforts include promoting socialisation, making direct
visits to those who suffer from malnutrition, educating field officers, providing information on
the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for new mothers, and coordinating efforts across various
agencies, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Social Affairs, World Food
Organisation, and World Health Organisation (citation Pinto).
According to research findings (Yeou-Mei, 2013), growth and development can be enhanced by
eating a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and supplements. Furthermore, in the fourth month,
albumin, phosphorus, and folate can raise lipoproteins and lower the ratio of total bad
cholesterol. Clinical recommendations state that children on a ketogenic diet should get enough
energy and protein, as well as any necessary vitamins or minerals. Environmental factors that
impact family nutrition, genetic factors, and hormonal issues all affect growth and development.
Postnatal environmental influences, including but not limited to socioeconomic situation,
nutrition, health condition, and inadequate early stimulation, can have an impact on impaired
growth and development in children (Pareyowari, 2014).
As a result, it is critical to focus on the family's nutritional status beginning with prenatal,
postnatal, and antenatal care. The family's ability to manage and provide food, minerals, and
vitamins, as well as avoid foods that can raise bad cholesterol, will also determine how well their
nutritional demands are met. Furthermore, the mother continues to feed her infant healthily
following ANC in order to generate enough breast milk to meet her child's demands for up to six
months before the need for extra food is met (Pinto, 2023). A nutritional state is either a
physiological state brought on by the availability of nutrients in the body's cells, or it is a balance
between the intake, absorption, and utilisation of nutrients. Parenting styles, disease infections,
food consumption, food security, environmental health, history of exclusive breastfeeding,
education, knowledge level, parents' occupation and income, and the number of family members
with toddler-level nutritional status are all related to one another. It is crucial to learn through
awareness-raising events, counselling for mothers, and routine observation. (Pinto, 2023). Giving
formula milk is dependent on a number of elements, two of which are that the feeding technique
must be modified to match the dosage and that the food equipment used must be clean.
Furthermore, there is a need to shorten the duration of nursing. It is preferable to use a sterile
15
procedure to manufacture milk multiple times. The proper method for preparing milk is to boil it
and then let it cool until it reaches a temperature of about 70 degrees Celsius.
That early childhood development and growth are significantly influenced by nutrition. Nutrition
is a necessary component that the body needs to exist in order to function, particularly when it
comes to physical growth and development, the brain and neurological system, and human
intelligence. The key to attaining growth and development outcomes in line with genetic
potential is meeting dietary demands. Any physical or structural alteration in the body that
results in an increase in size is referred to as growth. Development, on the other hand, is an
increase in a child's capacity for the increasingly complex structure and function of their body
(Guariso, 2019).
Good health: parents owe their children good health through encouragement and protection
from home accidents and imbibe in them the habit of hygiene practices. The child’s
emotional state must be guided adequately by showing love and affection to the child.
Adequate Nutrition: essential micronutrients are needed for a child’s brain and body to
develop both during a mother’s pregnancy and in the early period after birth. Essential
nutrients may include proteins and fats to help the body grow and vitamin A to build the
child’s immune system.
Responsive care giving: Observation and response to a child’s physical. Psychological and
emotional needs are important for a child’s health, learning and social relationships.
Security and safety: young children are incredibly vulnerable to numerous threats within the
environment. Children who are not made to feel safe and secure by a parent can withdraw
socially and act fearful of adults and other children.
Opportunities for early learning: learning begins from birth, not just when a child starts to
attend nursery, pre-school or school. This early learning will help a child develop motor
coordination, social competence, resilience, creativity and learning potentials. Opportunities

for early learning are promoted through play, communication and stimulation from other
children and adults.
This clarifies the need for children to have a healthy, nutritious diet in order for them to develop
normally and become capable of facing life's obstacles as well as contributing to the expansion
and advancement of the country. This essay examines the ideas of nutrition, mental health, and
child well-being for a healthier future in light of the significance of a healthy diet. In order to
inform parents and other carers about the risks of malnutrition and to dissuade them from
thinking about the impact of nutrition on mental health and overall wellbeing, it is advised that
nutrition education be taught in schools. (Mantoti L, 2020). In order to prevent negative effects
on people, families, and society as a whole, the government must take a number of measures to
combat malnutrition and provide community nutrition. These measures include promoting
socialisation, making direct visits to malnutrition victims, training field officers, educating
women about the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, and coordinating efforts across related
sectors. It has a significant impact on how families manage their nutrition, according to the
theory of knowledge that encompasses the cognitive domain. Therefore, in order to assist alter
people's behaviours regarding how to cook food that contains nutrients so that it might be useful
for family health, motivation through a variety of sources, including as mass media and
electronic media, is required.
Combining the therapies did not significantly lessen their impact, but there was no proof that
nutrition and stimulation had a beneficial synergistic relationship on infant development. After
intervention, children were only followed up on in three studies. At scale, any programme
evaluation consists of multiple interventions. Five promoted the development of children, one
did not, and two had shortcomings. The benefits of scaling programmes for nutritional status are
generally minimal. There is an immediate need for a thorough review of the addition of
stimulation to large-scale health and nutrition services, but we were unable to locate one. In
addition, determining the long-term effects of scale-up programmes requires the establishment of
quality control methods. Determining whether children continue to benefit from the programme
after it ends is also necessary. The Impact of Child Development and Nutritional Status on the
Integration of Nutrition and Development Interventions.

It has been established that moms have comparatively low fat storage when they start nursing.
While nursing causes a slight increase in their energy intake, early calculations indicate that this
increase might be enough to sustain their bodily integrity, carry out their regular daily activities,
and generate enough milk to promote the best possible growth for their kid. In many nations,
there is an issue with food quality in addition to the energy shortfall. Consumption of animal
protein and products is extremely low. Intakes of zinc and iron are low, yet because of the diet's
high phytate, fibre, and tea content, these minerals have poor bioavailability. For instance, it has
been proved that in Kenya, there is a very low intake of vitamin B12 and a mild to moderate
iodine deficit (IDD). The aforementioned micronutrients have been shown to affect Kenyan
children's linear growth even after controlling for confounding variables. There were
disadvantages to Kenya's early embrace of supplemental feeding. On the one hand, there was a
little increase in feverish illness and the possibility of breast milk intake in neonates who got
supplements, even if mothers did not reduce the frequency or length of nursing. However, it
appears that even modest levels of zinc and B12, which are found in supplemental diets,
positively impact linear development. (Neuman, 2014).
Conclusion
Providing children with all the required prerequisites, particularly excellent nutrition and
nutrients, is crucial given the fundamental importance of enabling them to reach their maximum
growth and developmental potential. This is a stand to encourage, enliven, and excite dynamic,
wise, and mentally sound individuals whose proactive attitude helps to enhance the national
economy for our beloved country's sustainable development. Also, early childhood nutrition is
critical to a child's growth and development, particularly to the development of the brain. The
nutrients that are ingested have a significant impact on brain development. Because food differs
in terms of its nutritional value, each meal that a child eats has a unique benefit for their body. It
is highly recommended that children eat a wide range of foods in quantities that correspond to
their needs. This is because children and adults require different nutritional intakes, and boys
require different nutritional intakes than girls.
