How to Cook Rice

A simple stovetop method for soft, fluffy white rice.

What You Need

White rice 1 cup

Water 1 1/2 cups for most long-grain rice

Salt 1/4 teaspoon, optional

Oil or butter 1 teaspoon, optional

Equipment Small saucepan with tight-fitting lid, measuring cup, fork

Step-by-Step Method
1. Rinse the rice under cool water two or three times, gently moving the grains. Drain well.
2. Add the rice, water, salt, and optional oil or butter to a saucepan.
3. Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
4. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cover with the lid.
5. Cook without opening the lid for about 15 minutes.
6. Turn off the heat and leave covered for 10 minutes so the steam finishes cooking the rice.
7. Open the lid away from your face, fluff with a fork, and serve.

Helpful Tips

• Rice varieties can need different water amounts; check the package when available.

• Do not stir during cooking, because stirring can make the rice sticky.

• Refrigerate leftovers promptly and reheat until steaming hot.

Safety Note

Steam can burn. Open the lid away from your face and keep the saucepan handle turned inward.
