CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Fire has been an essential element in the development of human civilization, providing numerous
benefits such as cooking, heating, industrial processing, electricity generation, and
manufacturing. Despite its importance, fire becomes extremely destructive when it occurs
unexpectedly or remains uncontrolled. Fire outbreaks have resulted in the loss of human lives,
destruction of valuable properties, environmental degradation, interruption of business activities,
and significant economic losses across homes, industries, hospitals, commercial establishments,
and public infrastructures (Federal Fire Service [FFS], 2025). In many developing countries,
including Nigeria, the increasing rate of fire incidents has become a major safety concern due to
inadequate preventive measures, delayed emergency response, poor monitoring systems, and
limited public awareness of fire safety practices.

Most fire disasters do not become catastrophic immediately after ignition. Instead, they usually
begin as a small flame or the gradual accumulation of smoke produced by overheating electrical
equipment, gas leakage, combustible materials, or electrical faults. During this early stage,
timely detection and immediate notification can significantly reduce the extent of damage by
allowing occupants or emergency responders to take prompt corrective action. Unfortunately,
conventional methods of fire detection in many homes and small organizations still depend
heavily on human observation. Such methods are often unreliable because they require someone
to be physically present to detect the fire and raise an alarm. Where conventional fire alarm
systems are available, many of them provide only local audible alerts without offering a means
of remotely informing the owner or responsible personnel when nobody is present at the location
(National Fire

Protection Association [NFPA], 2022). In recent years, the emergence of the Internet of Things

(IoT) has further revolutionized intelligent monitoring and automation systems. IoT refers to a
network of interconnected physical devices equipped with sensors, processors, and
communication technologies that enable them to collect, exchange, and process data over the
internet with minimal human intervention. In the field of fire safety, IoT-based systems have
made it possible to monitor environmental conditions remotely, generate real-time alerts, store
historical data, and support predictive maintenance. These capabilities have significantly
improved the efficiency and reliability of modern fire monitoring systems in smart homes,
industries, healthcare facilities, and commercial buildings.

In recent years, the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized intelligent
monitoring and automation systems. IoT refers to a network of interconnected physical devices
equipped with sensors, processors, and communication technologies that enable them to collect,
exchange, and process data over the Internet with minimal human intervention. In the field of
fire safety, IoT-based systems have made it possible to monitor environmental conditions
remotely, generate real-time alerts, store historical data, and support predictive maintenance.
These capabilities have significantly improved the efficiency and reliability of modern fire
monitoring systems in smart homes, industries, healthcare facilities, and commercial buildings
(Kelvin Ashton, 2009; Cisco, 2023).

Despite the numerous advantages offered by IoT-based fire detection systems, their
implementation often depends on reliable internet connectivity, cloud infrastructure, and
continuous network availability. In many developing countries, including Nigeria, these
requirements may not always be guaranteed because of unstable internet services, high
operational costs, and limited network coverage in certain locations. Consequently, Global
System for Mobile Communications (GSM) technology remains a practical and dependable
alternative for transmitting emergency notifications. GSM modules utilize the existing mobile
communication network to send Short Message Service (SMS) alerts directly to authorized users,
making them suitable for environments where internet connectivity is unavailable, unreliable, or
economically
2

impractical (3GPP, 2024; SIMCom Wireless Solutions, 2013). Therefore, the adoption of GSM
technology in this project provides a cost-effective, accessible, and reliable means of remote fire
notification while maintaining the simplicity and affordability required for small-scale safety
applications.

The rapid advancement of embedded systems, microcontroller technology, and wireless

communication has transformed the design of modern safety and security systems. Embedded
systems are specially designed computing systems developed to perform dedicated functions
with high reliability, low power consumption, compact size, and relatively low cost. These
systems have become indispensable in industrial automation, healthcare, transportation, smart
homes, environmental monitoring, and intelligent security applications (Vahid, F. 2010). The
integration of sensors, programmable microcontrollers, communication modules, and alarm
devices has made it possible to develop automated systems capable of monitoring environmental
conditions, processing sensor data in real time, and responding automatically whenever abnormal
conditions are detected (Marwedel, P. 2011).

Among the various microcontroller platforms available today, the Arduino platform has gained
widespread acceptance in education, research, and engineering applications because of its
simplicity, flexibility, affordability, and extensive community support. The Arduino platform
enables engineers, researchers and students to design intelligent control systems without the
complexity associated with many traditional embedded system development platforms. Its
compatibility with numerous sensors and communication modules makes it particularly suitable
for rapid prototyping and the development of cost-effective monitoring and automation systems
(Arduino, 2024).

In fire safety applications, smoke sensors and flame sensors play a critical role in identifying the
early signs of fire hazards. Smoke sensors, such as the MQ-2 gas sensor, are capable of detecting
smoke and combustible gases that may indicate the onset of a fire, while flame sensors detect
infrared radiation emitted by an open flame. By combining the outputs of these sensors, the
reliability and effectiveness of fire detection can be significantly improved, thereby minimizing
3

false alarms and increasing the probability of early hazard identification (Hanwei Electronics,
2012; Arduino, 2024).

Although local alarms such as buzzers and sirens are effective in notifying occupants within a
building, such alarm systems become less effective when the building is unoccupied since there
may be no one present to hear the alarm and respond promptly to the emergency. The
development of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) technology has provided an
efficient solution to this limitation. GSM modules, such as the SIM800L, enable embedded
systems to transmit Short Message Service (SMS) notifications directly to designated mobile
phone numbers whenever an emergency occurs. This remote notification capability ensures that
property owners, security personnel, or emergency responders receive timely information
regardless of their physical location, thereby improving response time and reducing potential
losses (SIMCom Wireless Solutions, 2013; 3GPP, 2024).

Based on these technological advancements and the growing need for affordable intelligent fire
safety systems, this project focuses on the design and construction of an Arduino-Based Fire and
Smoke Detection Alarm System with GSM SMS Notification. The proposed system integrates
an Arduino microcontroller, smoke sensor, flame sensor, GSM communication module, buzzer,
and display unit to continuously monitor environmental conditions, detect the presence of fire or
smoke, activate an audible alarm, and automatically transmit SMS alerts to predefined mobile
numbers. The implementation of such a system is expected to provide an efficient, reliable, and
cost-effective solution for early fire detection and remote emergency notification in residential
buildings, offices, laboratories, schools, and other environments where fire safety is of
paramount importance. Recent reports indicate that fire outbreaks continue to pose a significant
challenge in Nigeria despite ongoing efforts by fire safety agencies and emergency responders.

According to statistics released by the Federal Fire Service (FFS, 2026), Nigeria recorded 1,866
fire incidents in 2025, resulting in 114 fatalities, injuries to citizens and firefighters, and an
estimated ₦74.75 billion worth of property destroyed.
4

The increasing occurrence of residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional fire outbreaks
highlights the urgent need for intelligent fire detection systems capable of identifying fire
hazards at their earliest stages. Early detection not only minimizes the destruction caused by fire
but also improves emergency response time, thereby increasing the chances of saving lives and
valuable property (National Fire Protection Association [NFPA], 2022). Consequently, the
integration of modern sensing technologies, embedded systems, and wireless communication has
become an important area of research in the development of effective fire safety solutions
(Vahid, 2010).

In view of the increasing occurrence of fire outbreaks, the limitations of conventional fire
detection methods, and the growing availability of embedded systems and wireless
communication technologies, there is a clear need for an intelligent, reliable, and cost-effective
fire monitoring system capable of detecting fire hazards at an early stage and notifying
responsible individuals immediately. This project, therefore, focuses on the design and
construction of an Arduino-Based Fire and Smoke Detection Alarm System with GSM SMS
Notification. By integrating fire and smoke sensors with an Arduino microcontroller and a GSM
communication module, the proposed system is expected to provide prompt detection, local
alarm activation, and remote SMS alerts, thereby improving fire safety and minimizing the
potential loss of lives and property.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Fire outbreaks continue to pose serious threats to human lives, properties, and critical
infrastructures despite the availability of various fire safety measures. In many residential
buildings, offices, schools, laboratories, and small business environments, fire incidents are often
detected late due to inadequate monitoring systems, delayed human response, or complete
absence of automatic fire detection devices. This delay in detection frequently allows the fire to
spread beyond its point of origin, resulting in increased damage, financial losses, and, in some
cases, loss of life (Federal Fire Service, [FFS], 2026).
Conventional fire alarm systems used in many environments are primarily designed to produce

local audible alarms whenever smoke or fire is detected. Although these alarms are effective in
alerting occupants within the immediate vicinity, they become less effective when the premises
are unoccupied or when the responsible personnel are located far from the affected area.
Consequently, emergency response may be delayed because the property owner or relevant
authorities remain unaware of the incident until significant damage has already occurred
(National Fire Protection Association [NFPA], 2022).

Furthermore, many advanced fire monitoring systems available today incorporate Internet of
Things (IoT) technologies and cloud-based services. While these systems provide efficient
remote monitoring capabilities, they often depend on stable internet connectivity, continuous
power supply, and relatively high implementation costs. Such requirements may limit their
adoption in many homes, educational institutions, and small-scale establishments, particularly in
developing countries where internet accessibility and affordability remain significant challenges
(Cisco, 2023; 3rd Generation Partnership Project [3GPP], 2024).

These limitations create the need for a reliable, affordable, and intelligent fire detection system
capable of detecting both smoke and fire at an early stage, providing immediate local warning,
and transmitting emergency notifications to authorized users regardless of their physical location.
Therefore, this project seeks to address these challenges through the design and construction of
an Arduino-Based Fire and Smoke Detection Alarm System with GSM SMS Notification,
thereby enhancing early fire detection, improving emergency response, and minimizing the
potential loss of lives and property.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The aim of this project is to design and construct an Arduino-based fire and smoke detection
alarm system with GSM SMS notification capable of detecting fire hazards at an early stage,
activating a local alarm, and sending SMS alerts to designated users in order to improve fire
safety and minimize potential losses.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The objectives of this project are:

1. To Design a fire and smoke detection system based on an Arduino microcontroller

platform.

2. To Integrate suitable sensing components capable of detecting smoke and fire hazards at
an early stage.

3. To Develop a program for the Arduino microcontroller to process sensor signals and
control the response of the system.

4. To Interface a GSM communication module with the system to enable SMS notification
during fire emergencies.

5. To Construct and assemble the hardware components into a functional prototype.

6. To Implement an alarm mechanism that provides immediate local warning when smoke
or fire is detected.

7. To Test and evaluate the performance of the developed system under different operating
conditions to determine its reliability and effectiveness.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The development of an Arduino-Based Fire and Smoke Detection Alarm System with GSM
SMS Notification is significant because it provides an efficient and affordable approach to early
fire detection and emergency notification. The system is designed to reduce the delay associated
with manual fire detection by automatically monitoring environmental conditions and providing
immediate alerts when smoke or fire is detected.
The system will be beneficial to homeowners, schools, offices, laboratories, and small-scale
businesses by providing an additional layer of fire safety and improving their ability to respond

quickly to fire emergencies. The integration of GSM SMS notification ensures that responsible
individuals can receive alerts even when they are not physically present at the location of the
incident.

Furthermore, the project demonstrates the practical application of embedded systems, sensor
technology, and wireless communication in solving real-world safety challenges. It provides a
cost-effective approach for small-scale fire monitoring applications by utilizing affordable and
readily available electronic components while maintaining essential detection and notification
functions.

The project also serves as a valuable learning resource for students, researchers, and engineers
interested in microcontroller-based automation, safety systems, and communication
technologies. It can provide a foundation for future improvements, such as the integration of
internet-based monitoring, artificial intelligence, data logging, and advanced sensor technologies.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This project focuses on the design and construction of an Arduino-Based Fire and Smoke
Detection Alarm System with GSM SMS Notification. The system is designed to monitor
environmental conditions, detect the presence of smoke and fire using appropriate sensors, and
provide immediate warning through an alarm mechanism.

The scope of this project includes the integration of an Arduino microcontroller, smoke detection
sensor, flame detection sensor, GSM communication module, buzzer, display unit, and power
supply components to develop a functional fire monitoring prototype. The Arduino
microcontroller is programmed to process sensor signals, activate an alarm when fire or smoke is
detected, and send SMS notifications to predefined users through the GSM network.
8

The project focuses on the design and construction of an Arduino-based system capable of
detecting smoke and flame conditions, activating an alarm, and sending SMS notifications
through GSM communication. The study covers the integration, programming, and testing of
these components to develop a functional fire monitoring prototype.

The developed prototype is intended for educational and small-scale safety applications,
providing a foundation for further improvement and integration with more advanced
technologies in future developments.

1.7 Limitations of the Study

Although the developed Arduino-Based Fire and Smoke Detection Alarm System with GSM
SMS Notification is designed to provide early fire detection and emergency notification, certain
factors define the operational boundaries of the system.

The developed prototype is primarily designed for small-scale indoor environments such as
residential rooms, kitchens, small offices, laboratories, and similar spaces where early detection
of smoke and flame conditions is required. Due to the limited number and arrangement of
sensors used in the prototype, the detection coverage is dependent on sensor placement,
environmental conditions, and the size of the monitored area. Large facilities such as industrial
buildings and commercial complexes would require multiple interconnected units and advanced
detection infrastructure for complete coverage.

The accuracy of the system is influenced by the characteristics of the selected sensors. Factors
such as smoke concentration, airflow, temperature, humidity, and distance from the source of
fire may affect the response time and sensitivity of the sensors. Therefore, proper positioning and
calibration are required to achieve reliable operation.

The GSM SMS notification feature depends on the availability of a functional cellular network, a
registered SIM card, and sufficient network service quality. The system does not require internet
9

connectivity or Wi-Fi communication; however, SMS transmission may be affected in areas

with poor GSM network coverage or temporary network interruptions.

The operation of the prototype also depends on a stable power supply. In the absence of an
appropriate backup power system, prolonged power failure may affect continuous monitoring
and notification capability.

Furthermore, the developed system is a functional prototype intended to demonstrate the

application of embedded systems, sensor technology, and GSM communication in fire safety
monitoring. It is not designed as a replacement for certified industrial fire protection systems but
provides a foundation for further improvement, expansion, and integration with more advanced
technologies. limitations related to available financial resources, time constraints, and component
availability may influence the extent of the design, construction, and testing process. Despite
these limitations, the developed system is capable of demonstrating the fundamental principles of
automated fire detection and GSM-based emergency notification.
