1 Assessment Details

✁ Major assessment dates and venues are provided at [Link] and [Link]
✁ There are tutorial tests every week during the last 30 minutes of the tutorial.
✁ Method of assessment as indicated in the Calendar Part 11
Calculations of the final mark (according to the formulas in the assessment rules):

WAF = 0.1 WA1 = 0.3 WA2 = 0.6

AF = The average of all your tutorial test marks excluding the two worst marks

2 Language of Tuition

✁ Afrikaans and Engels

✁ The language of tuition in this module is according to the Faculty’s approved Language Implemen-
tation Plan. Please refer to the website of the Engineering Faculty or the “General Information”
block on SUNLearn for the particulars.

3 Module Objectives
Aim: To provide students with knowledge of essential concepts and techniques in calculus. The following
topics are covered: number systems; inequalities and absolute values; functions; mathematical in-
duction; binomial theorem; di!erentiation and applications (graphs, optimization, Newton’s method);
definite and indefinite integrals; substitution rule for integration; inverse functions; exponential and
logarithmic functions.
A student who has successfully completed this module can:
✁ understand the basic concepts of interval notation, absolute values, solving inequalities of real
numbers;
✁ do proofs by means of induction and apply the binomial theorem
✁ understand concepts relating to functions of one variable: domain, limit, and continuity
✁ apply all di!erentiation rules and formulas
✁ draw curves of functions
✁ calculate integrals by using antiderivatives or by applying the substitution rule
✁ calculate the area between curves
✁ understand and apply key theorems such as the extreme value theorem, the mean value theorem
and the fundamental theorem of calculus
✁ understand and manipulate various types of functions such as algebraic functions, piecewise-defined
functions, trigonometric functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, inverse functions, and
integral-defined functions
✁ approximate specific roots of an equation by means of Newton’s Method
✁ apply the theory of one-variable calculus to solve optimization problems
