HISTORY OF AI
From the introduction of the Turing test to the
celebrated release of OpenAI, historical milestones
in AI have permanently changed consumer lifestyle
and business operations.
● The Birth of Artificial
Intelligence
The birth of artificial intelligence (AI) can be traced back
to the mid-20th century, when key milestones laid the
foundation for the field. In 1950, British mathematician
Alan Turing proposed the Turing Test, a concept that
measured a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent
behaviour indistinguishable from that of a human. This
idea sparked interest in the possibility of machines
simulating human intelligence. A few years later, in 1956,
the Dartmouth Conference was held, organized by John
McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and
Claude Shannon, where the term "artificial intelligence"
was coined.
This conference marked the formal beginning of AI as a
field of research. Early AI work focused on symbolic
reasoning and problem-solving, with pioneers like Allen
Newell and Herbert A. Simon developing systems that
used rules and logic to mimic human thought processes.
In 1958, Frank Rosenblatt introduced the perceptron, an
early neural network model, further advancing the
development of AI. Together, these developments laid the
groundwork for the evolution of AI into the powerful
field it is today.
● The Golden Years-Early
Enthusiasm
During the "Golden Years" of AI, the development of
ELIZA and WABOT-1 highlighted the excitement and
optimism surrounding the field. ELIZA, created by
Joseph Weizenbaum in 1966, was an early natural
language processing program that simulated conversation,
with its DOCTOR script acting as a psychotherapist. This
demonstrated the potential of machines to interact with
humans using language.
In 1973, WABOT-1, developed by Wako University in
Japan, became one of the first humanoid robots capable of
walking, recognizing speech, and engaging in simple
conversation in Japanese. Both innovations showcased
AI’s ability to perform human-like tasks, fueling further
research and enthusiasm during this era.
● The First AI Winner
The first major AI victory came in 1997, when IBM's
Deep Blue defeated world chess champion Garry
Kasparov. The match, held from May 3 to May 11, 1997,
marked a significant milestone in AI's development,
showcasing its ability to solve complex strategic problems
and outthink a human champion
● A Boom of AI
In the 1980s, AI experienced a boom with the rise of
expert systems, which gained popularity for their ability
to replicate human decision-making. These systems, such
as MYCIN, were used in fields like medicine and finance,
leading to practical applications of AI. The success of
expert systems in solving complex problems sparked
increased investment and interest, revitalizing the AI
industry. This period marked a significant turning point,
as AI moved from theoretical concepts to real-world use,
setting the stage for future advancements in the field. The
Ernst Dickmanns developed the first driverless van for
Mercedes.
● The Second AI Winner
The Second AI Winner refers to the period from 1987 to
1993, marked by a resurgence in AI research despite the
challenges of the first AI winter. During these years,
expert systems continued to evolve, and new technologies
like neural networks began gaining traction. Increased
funding and advancements in hardware reignited interest,
paving the way for modern AI development.
● The Emergence of
Intelligence Agents
The emergence of intelligent agents during the 1990s and
early 2000s marked a transformative era in AI, with
systems capable of learning, decision-making, and
interaction. IBM Deep Blue became a landmark in 1997
when it defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov,
demonstrating AI's ability to solve complex strategic
problems. Around the same time, the Kismet robot,
developed at MIT, showcased emotional intelligence by
recognizing and responding to human facial expressions,
paving the way for human-robot interaction.
In the early 2000s, intelligent agents began entering daily
life, with products like the Roomba, an autonomous
vacuum cleaner, becoming a household name for its
ability to navigate and clean spaces independently. By
2009, Google’s driverless cars further pushed the
boundaries of intelligent agents by successfully
navigating real-world environments, using AI to process
data from sensors and make real-time driving decisions.
These innovations highlighted the versatility of intelligent
agents, revolutionizing industries and integrating AI into
everyday life.
● Deep Learning, Big Data and
Artificial General
Intelligence
Deep learning, big data, and the pursuit of Artificial
General Intelligence (AGI) have revolutionized the field
of AI, driving its rapid advancements and practical
applications. IBM’s Watson, a landmark achievement in
2011, used deep learning and big data to analyze vast
amounts of information, enabling it to outperform human
champions on Jeopardy! This breakthrough demonstrated
AI's potential in processing and understanding complex
information.
Around the same time, virtual assistants like Siri (2011),
Google Now (2012), and Alexa (2014) brought AI into
everyday life, offering personalized assistance, natural
language processing, and smart device integration.
Devices like Google Home further popularized AI by
enabling seamless smart home automation and voice
interaction.
IBM’s Project Debater took AI a step further by engaging
in structured debates with humans, showcasing advanced
reasoning and argumentation.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT, introduced in 2020, harnessed the
power of deep learning and big data to generate
human-like text, answer complex questions, and assist in
a variety of tasks, from writing to coding. These
advancements demonstrate how deep learning and big
data have shaped AI into a tool capable of handling
diverse, human-like tasks, while paving the way for
AGI—AI that can replicate and adapt human intelligence
across a wide range of domains.
