Based on an original black-and-white chart from the 1850s, this revised and reissued
chromolithograph remained in print until the end of the nineteenth century. The version shown
here dates from 1873, when it appeared as the seventh plate in Adam and Charles Black's
General Atlas of the World. In addition to a depiction of the Solar System, the chart fills its visual
and textual space with a wealth of illustrated information. Among the topics presented are the
comparative sizes of the planets; a table showing the apparent size of the Sun as seen from
eleven celestial bodies; the cycle of the seasons; climatic zones; meridians and parallels; the
theory of the tides; solar eclipses; the phases of the Moon; a mariner's compass; dawn and
twilight; the Earth's spherical shape and atmospheric refraction; and the differing patterns of
summer and winter sunlight.

This chart is the third plate from Popular Astronomy, or Description of the Celestial Bodies, with
an Atlas of Transparent Plates Comprising 12 Charts for the Use of the General Public, published
in 1879. It is based on James Reynolds and John Emslie's Astronomical Diagrams, first published
in London in 1846. At the time, in the absence of sufficiently advanced or powerful instruments,
even the "most recent authorities" referred to in the work's full title had only a partial
understanding of astronomy. For example, the Sun is described as "a dark body surrounded by a
luminous atmosphere," and the eight planets are shown as having a total of 17 moons, whereas
today more than 200 natural satellites are known.

This chart is the ninth plate from Popular Astronomy, or Description of the Celestial Bodies,
published in 1879. It is based on James Reynolds and John Emslie's Astronomical Diagrams, first
published in London in 1846. Beyond its strikingly colorful composition, the chart offers a glimpse
into the history of astronomy through the use of now-obsolete units of measurement, such as the
league (4,000 m) and the myriametre (10,000 m). It also features the zodiac, a system developed
in Babylonia in the 5th century BCE. Its twelve divisions bear only a distant relationship to the
constellations after which they are named and have long since fallen outside the realm of
scientific astronomy.

illustrations-highly colorful yet deliberately simplified-depict medicinal herbs, along with a small
number of animals, some of them mythical. They were most likely intended as a prestigious
manuscript for the library of Albert III of Bavaria (1438-1460).
