Tutorial Questions on Chapter 4

(Angle Modulation and Demodulation)

1. Determine the instantaneous frequency and frequency deviation of the following wave forms.
a. 𝑆(𝑡) = 32 cos(100𝜋𝑡 + sin(20𝜋𝑡))
b. 𝑆(𝑡) = 12 cos(8𝜋𝑡 + 4𝜋𝑡 2 )
c. 𝑆(𝑡) = cos(200𝜋𝑡) cos(5 sin(2𝜋𝑡)) + sin(200𝜋𝑡) sin(5 sin(2𝜋𝑡))
2. A sinusoidal wave of amplitude 10v and frequency of 1kHz is applied to an FM generator that
has as frequency sensitivity constant of 40Hz/v. Determine:
a. The frequency deviation
b. The modulation index
c. Whether the FM system is NB OR WB.
3. For an FM signal given by 𝑆(𝑡) = 12 sin(6𝜋108 𝑡 + 5 sin(1600𝜋𝑡)); Determine:
a. The carrier and modulating frequencies.
b. The modulation index.
c. The frequency deviation.
d. The bandwidth.
e. The average transmitted power of the FM transmitter considering a 1Ω characteristic
impedance for the antenna.
4. A 100MHz unmodulated carrier signal can deliver a power of 100W to a 1Ω load. This carrier is
frequency modulated by a 2KHz modulating signal causing a maximum frequency deviation of
4KHz. The FM signal is coupled to the load through a BPF with a center frequency of 100MHz
and a variable bandwidth.
a. Identify all significant Bessel function coefficient values (𝐽𝑛 (𝛽) ≥ 0.01 ) and the number
of side bands.
b. Find the bandwidth using number of side bands and Carson’s rule. Compare the two
results.
c. Determine the total power delivered to the antenna considering all significant sidebands.
d. Determine the total power delivered to the antenna when the BW of the BPF is set to be
10 KHz.
