Week: 3-4 (6 hours)

DESIRED LEARNING OUTCOMES (DLO)

At the end of this module, you should be able to:
1. Discuss the concepts of heredity and maturation
2. Identify biological and environmental factors that impact the physical self
3. Determine the factors that contribute to one's sexual development

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Module 2! This module will help you understand the biological
foundations of who you are. Have you ever wondered why you look like your
parents? Or why you experienced certain changes during puberty? These questions
relate to your biological self—the physical and sexual aspects that make you
uniquely you.
As a young adult in Cotabato, understanding your biological self is important not
just for academic purposes, but for making informed decisions about your health,
relationships, and future.

LESSON 1: THE PHYSICAL SELF

A. Heredity and Maturation

Heredity refers to the passing of traits from parents to offspring through genes. These
are the characteristics you were born with—your eye color, height potential, body
type, and even some aspects of your personality.
Maturation is the natural growth and development that occurs as you age. This is
why you grew taller, your voice changed, and your body developed the way it did
during adolescence.

Activity 1.1: My Family Traits

Direction: List down five physical traits you inherited from your parents or family
members.

B. Biological and Environmental Factors

Your physical self is shaped by two major influences:

1. Biological Factors (Nature)

• Genetics/DNA
• Hormones
• Brain development
• Physical health conditions
• Nutritional needs
2. Environmental Factors (Nurture)
• Nutrition and diet
• Physical activity and exercise
• Family lifestyle
• Socioeconomic status
• Cultural practices
• Access to healthcare
• Environmental conditions

Activity 1.2: Nature vs. Nurture in My Life
