What is Consumer Behavior?
Consumer behavior is the study of how people decide what products or services to buy, when to buy them, where to buy them, and why they choose
one product over another.
Simply put, consumer behavior helps businesses understand their customers.
If a company understands its customers, it can create better products and better marketing strategies.
Why is consumer behavior is important?
Consumer behavior helps businesses:
1. Understand customer needs.
2. Improve products and services.
3. Create effective advertisements.
4. Increase customer satisfaction.
5. Build long-term customer relationships.
Without understanding consumers, businesses may sell products that nobody wants.
Factors Influencing Consumer Behavior
There are four major factors that influence buying decisions.
1. Cultural Factors
Culture influences the products people buy.
Example:
During Christmas, many Filipino families buy ham, spaghetti, gifts, and decorations because these are part of our traditions.
2. Social Factors
People are influenced by family, friends, classmates, and even social media influencers.
Example:
A student buys a particular brand of shoes because most of their friends are wearing the same brand.
3. Personal Factors
Buying decisions are also influenced by personal characteristics such as:
Age, Occupation, Income
Example:
A college student may choose an affordable smartphone, while a professional may buy a premium model.
4. Psychological Factors
These include motivation, perception, learning, beliefs, and attitudes.
Example:
If you had a good experience with a restaurant, you are more likely to eat there again.
Consumer Buying Decision Process
Before buying a product, consumers usually go through five stages.
Step 1 – Problem Recognition
The consumer realizes there is a need.
Example:
"My phone is broken."
Step 2 – Information Search
The consumer looks for information.
They may ask friends, search online, or watch reviews.
Step 3 – Evaluation of Alternatives
The consumer compares different brands based on price, quality, features, and customer reviews.
Step 4 – Purchase Decision
The consumer chooses and buys the product.
Step 5 – Post-Purchase Behavior
After using the product, the consumer decides whether they are satisfied or dissatisfied.
Satisfied customers usually buy again and recommend the product to others.
