STRUCTURAL DESIGN (ST317DB) TUTORIALS
Tutorial # 4
1. The simply supported beam in Diagram Q1 below is supporting a uniformly distributed nominal dead
load of 5.5 kN/m, a nominal imposed load of 7.5kN/m and a nominal point load of 10kN at the centre
of the span. The beam is fully laterally restrained. By checking the bending moment resistance, shear
force resistance and the experienced deflection, deduce if a 533 X 210 X 92 kg/m I-section will be
adequate to serve as a beam under these loads. The beam is made of steel of Grade 350WA with yield
stress of 350Mpa and an ultimate strength of 480Mpa. Maximum deflection is given as span/300 and

the maximum vertical deflection of the beam is given by; 𝛿 = +

2. Calculate the moment of resistance of a simply supported 406 X 140 X 39 kg/m. The beam
shown in Diagram Q2 is laterally supported at its end only. Assume that the point load is
applied at the centre of the span. Is the moment of resistance adequate if the nominal dead load
P=18 kN?

3. Calculate the momnet of resistance of the beam in question 2 above if lateral support is now
provided at centre of the span of the beam.
