STRUCTURAL DESIGN (ST317DB) TUTORIALS
Tutorial # 5
A column between floors of a multi-storey building frame is subjected to a biaxial bending at
the top and bottom. The column member consist of a Grade S355JR steel, 356 X 171 X 57 I-
section. Check if the I section is adequate if it has an effective length of 3.7 m (only check
cross-section strength). The column can be assumed to form part of braced structure and the
design loads are as follows:
Ultimate axial compression = 1800 kN
Ultimate moments,
Top - About major axis = 150 kNm
- About minor axis = 25 kNm
Bottom - About major axis = 200 kNm
- About minor axis = -30 kNm
2. A corner-column on a residential building has a span of 5m and is braced at 1.5 m from the
top and 1.5m from the bottom. The column is made of S355JR steel with yield stress of 350
MPa and an ultimate strength of 480 MPa and is subjected to the following ultimate design
loads;
Bending moments
Top: About the major axis 𝑀𝑢 = 150 𝑘𝑁m
Bottom: About the major axis 𝑀𝑢 = 450 𝑘𝑁𝑚
Axial compressive load 𝐶𝑢 = 450 𝑘𝑁
The column is built from a 305 X 165 X 54 kg/m I-section. Check the suitability of the given
section. (check cross-sectional strength only)
