STRUCTURAL DESIGN (ST317DB) TUTORIALS
Tutorial # 3
1. Check the adequacy of a 203 X 133 X 30 kg/m I-section, to be used as a column in
resisting an ultimate compressive load of 850 kN. The column is made of steel of Grade
350WA with yield stress of 350Mpa and an ultimate strength of 480Mpa. The column
is 6000mm in length and is fixed at both ends.
2. Check the adequacy of an unequal leg angle 150 X 90 X 26.6 kg/m Grade S355JR steel
column. The concentrically loaded pinned-end column measures 3000 mm in length.
This column is to support a nominal compressive dead load of 400 kN and a nominal
live load of 150 kN.
3. Upon erecting the column in question 2 above, the designer (you), is informed that the
unequal leg angle is not available, and he decides to use a parallel flange channel PC230
X 90 weighing 32.2kg/m, will this channel be adequate?
