sustainability inside the campus.

By implementing this idea, we can build an eco-friendly and sustainable mode

of transport for students, faculty and all the stakeholders of Woxsen University.

This report will target the key requirements needed to start the initiative. Firstly,
by analysing the demand, for this service, this report will prepare
recommendations on the number of vehicles that will have to be procured or
will have to be leased. After the procurement stage, this report recommends the
technological requirements that are needed for integrating the vehicles into our
mobile application. This report also understands the budget and time constraints
before making any of the recommendations.

The successful implementation of this project will set Woxsen University as an

example for similar kinds of sustainable initiatives in all the universities and
institutions in India.

technology integration.
Overview of Operations Management for Implementing e-mobility within

the Woxsen University Campus

The purpose of the report is to develop a reliable and web based e-bike rental
application and rental service. The application aims to make it easier and more
convenient for all the stakeholders of Woxsen University to rent bikes quickly
and comfortably.
Bike-sharing programs promote sustainable travel and provide convenience for
the Woxsen University community while reducing pollution. Some universities
have already adopted bike-sharing programs for commuting and on-campus
travel (Boniphace Kutela & Eneliko Mulokozi, 2017).
In our proposed bike-sharing program, an on-campus rider, can pick up an e-
bike from a docking station inside the campus, ride to a station near their
destination, and return the bike there. Riders can check the availability of bikes
in stations online in real time. Payment is made through adding money into the
application's wallet and the amount gets deducted from the wallet based on the
customer's usage. The customer may also withdraw the wallet balance anytime
they wish to do so.
This report has been aimed at identifying the suitable bikes that can be procured
or leased and also about the technological requirements that are needed to build
a safe smooth and secured mobile application for the implementation of the
bike-sharing program.
The success of any e-mobility initiative hinges on a robust technological
infrastructure. As Woxsen University transitions to e-bikes, several key
technological requirements must be addressed. Firstly, the establishment of a
reliable and energy-efficient charging infrastructure is paramount. This involves
strategically positioning charging stations across the campus to ensure
convenient access for e-bike dock stations. Moreover, the implementation of
smart charging solutions, incorporating real-time monitoring and data analytics,
can optimize energy consumption and enhance overall operational efficiency.
The integration of a seamless navigation system is another crucial technological
facet. A dedicated mobile application, tailored to the needs of the university
community, can provide users with real-time information on e-bike availability.
Furthermore, the application can facilitate secure user authentication, allowing
for personalized experiences and ensuring the efficient allocation of resources.
The development of a user-friendly and feature-rich mobile application is
central to the success of the e-mobility initiative. This application should serve
as a comprehensive platform, enabling users to seamlessly locate and unlock e-
bikes.
The mobile application should prioritise accessibility, ensuring compatibility
across various devices and operating systems. Furthermore, features like real-
time tracking, push notifications, and integration with campus events can
enhance the overall user experience, making e-mobility an integral and
enjoyable part of Woxsen University’s campus life.
This report delves into the critical aspects that influence the operational
performance and efficiency of the bike-sharing system and the operational
challenges involved in implementing bike bike-sharing program within the
Woxsen University campus. The survey results showed that more than xxx%
per cent of respondents considered bike-sharing as their preferred choice for
inter-campus travel. The findings suggest that the service function of MaaS-
based bike-sharing is accepted by users (Wang Yang & Lee Sung-pil, 2019)).

The success of such a system relies on strategic planning, systematic operations,

and the integration of various elements that contribute to the seamless
functioning of the bike-sharing ecosystem (Ratieh Indah Permitasari & Riad
Sahara, 2018). By examining factors such as the strategic location of dock
stations, the development of systematic operations, the presence of dedicated
bike lanes, the utilization of bike-sharing applications, and the implementation
of safety measures, this report sheds light on the multifaceted nature of creating
a green and reliable mode of transportation within a campus setting (Nuur
Fathin Roslan & Siti Khatijah Hassan, 2018).

The planning phase involves identifying the goals and expectations of the bike-
share system and determining its feasibility in the Woxsen community. The user
demand analysis considered the transportation behaviour and the benefits of
bike-sharing to gauge the projected demand for the system. Various methods,
including surveys and projections, are utilized to ascertain user demand, which
influences station location planning.
Dock-based bike rental systems provide a convenient and eco-friendly mode of
transportation for short distances. Users can easily rent and return bikes at
designated docking stations, making them accessible and efficient for inter-
campus commuting (Meghavi Hada1 & Harsh Tawade2, 2022)

This report provides a comprehensive and detailed overview of the planning and
implementation phases of bike-share systems, offering insights into key
considerations and factors that contribute to successful implementation (Tucker
Gaegauf, 2014).
The planning process is divided into six phases.
1. Finding the right manufacturer
2. Dock Station Planning
3. Integration with mobile app and technology
4. Development of a mobile application

Discussion and implementation: Findings, inferences, and
recommendations
As per the market survey done across the university and among various
stakeholders. Responses have been collected data from 255 people including
students, staff, and faculty members.

Figure 1:

The first question that has been asked was to find out how most of the people
travel from their hostels to the admin block. The response that we got for this
was hugely the reason why we have initiated this project and that is the exact
problem we are going to solve after successful implementation of the project.
As seen in Figure1 87% of the respondents have opted for the option of walking
where the opportunity for this project heavily has a use case. This provided this
project the primary validation for the success of this initiative.
Figure 2:

Another aspect that was intended to know through question two was how long
most of the people wait for the campus bus that operates during the lunch hour
in the campus. This response was important because that time is one of the peak
hours when most of the stakeholders travel at the same and if the response is
positive our project can succeed. As seen in Figure 2 we interpret that 61.1%
wait for more than 5 minutes to get onto the bus and 16.7% wait for 5 minutes,
these numbers are huge and they can potentially turn up to an alternative
solution that we provide and this demonstrates a possibility and demand for our
service.
This was also necessary for us to understand how long a customer can wait in
order to get the bike If all the bikes are booked at once. By analysing the
responses we can maintain an optimal number of bikes at each dock station.
Figure 3:

The next question was a follow up to our earlier question which was intended to
know if even after waiting for the bus whether everyone were able to grab a seat
for themselves or not. The reason to know about this is to understand if despite
waiting for the bus when they cannot find a seat for themselves still, people use
the bus. This can be interpreted that walking is the problem that most of the
stakeholders face and which can be solved through the proposed bike-sharing
project. The responses have also helped us to understand the need to provide a
intra campus mobility service.
Figure 4:

Another aspect that we intended to understand from all the stakeholders was if
there have been difficulties in carrying their luggage from the main gate to their
hostels. The reason we wanted to know this was to understand this aspect which
would be a great marketing point for us, as per the responses 92.6% out of 255
people are facing difficulties which means there is a definite need for a dock
station at the gate with a very high demand. This also gives us another problem
where our project would be providing solution.

Figure 5:
Our next and final question intended to understand what major factors the
customers would be looking for to be present in the solution to the problem
faced by them. This question was to understand if the solution that our project is
offering is a right fit in the market or if we need to change our offering.
According to the responses, we could easily interpret that affordability and
speed of travel were the most prioritized by customers and there were a
considerable number of people who also emphasized on the environmental
impact and ease of use. We have considered all these aspects carefully and have
worked to incorporate all of them into the project.

Implementation
As a part of scouting for the right manufacturer, we found Hala Mobility which
is an E-mobility start up based out of Hyderabad. As mentioned in the planning
phase 1, this was the first step of the project. Hala Mobility is a leading provider

minimal maintenance.
3. Battery Performance: Battery performance is a key aspect of Hala
Mobility e-bikes, as they rely on efficient power delivery for optimal
performance. Hala e-bikes are equipped with high-quality lithium-ion
batteries known for their reliability, energy density, and longevity. The
batteries undergo rigorous testing to ensure consistent performance and
extended lifespan, providing sufficient power for daily commutes within
the campus setting. Another main advantage is that Hala Mobility also
offers charging solutions that are convenient and efficient, allowing to
recharge the bikes quickly and easily.
4. After-Sales Support: Hala Mobility prioritizes customer satisfaction and
offers comprehensive after-sales support to address any maintenance or
repair needs. The company provides warranty coverage for e-bikes,
ensuring peace of mind in case of any manufacturing defects or issues.
Hala also maintains a responsive customer service team that is readily
available to assist with any inquiries or concerns. Maintenance and repair
services are also provided through authorized service centres in general
but in our project, we have mutually agreed to get all services within the
campus ensuring prompt resolution of issues and maximizing uptime for
users.
5. Industry Reputation: Hala Mobility has established a solid reputation
within the Emobility industry as a provider of high-quality and reliable
electric mobility solutions. The company collaborates with reputable
suppliers known for their expertise in producing bikes that meet stringent
quality standards. Hala’s commitment to delivering top-notch products
has earned it recognition and trust among customers and partners in the
industry.
6. User Feedback: Hala has garnered exceptional user feedback, reflecting
the high satisfaction levels among its customers. Users consistently praise

Hala Mobility delivers e-bikes that offer superior performance,
efficiency, and user experience.
8. Scalability: Hala Mobility has suppliers with the capability to scale
production and adapt to potential increases in demand. This ensures that
the bike-sharing system can accommodate growth and expansion without
compromising on quality or reliability.
9. Integration with Emerging Technologies: Hala Mobility actively works
to integrate emerging technologies into their e-bikes, such as IoT
connectivity and smart features. By leveraging these technologies, Hala
can future proof its bikes and enhance user experiences. IoT connectivity
enables features such as remote monitoring, diagnostics, and firmware
updates, while smart features enhance convenience and safety for users.
By embracing emerging technologies, Hala Mobility ensures that its bikes
remain competitive in the market and meet the evolving needs of all
users.
10. Lease Format Consideration for Fiscal Prudence: Evaluating the
option to procure bikes through a lease format rather than outright
purchase is a prudent consideration for the project due to the significant
investment involved in the project. Hala has agreed to our proposal for a
lease format that provides financial flexibility, allowing us to allocate
resources strategically and potentially free up capital for other essential
aspects of the project. The Leasing agreement also includes provisions for
maintenance and lifecycle management, ensuring that e-bikes remain in
optimal condition throughout the lease period.

Figure 6 Figure 7
After carefully evaluating all these factors we have negotiated with Team Hala
and have also met their Founder Mr. Srikanth and have agreed to get the bikes
from Hala for a cost of ₹15000 for 6 months per bike
At the pilot stage of the project, we have planned for three dock stations
across the campus and at each dock we need 6 bikes for the pilot stage
This comes down to 18 bikes for the whole campus and our initial leasing
costs for 6 months is ₹2,70,000.
This was just for the pilot stage and once we get well established we would
add more vehicles into our fleet.

The next major aspect of the project is to develop a fully functional and
user-friendly mobile app for all users. Based on all the necessary requirements
we have designed a mobile app workflow as in figure 9. Designing an intuitive
navigation flow that allows users to easily access key features such as bike
rental, station locations, and ride history is a very crucial aspect of the project
because that defines the customer journey with us and a great customer journey
is crucial for retaining the customers.
Figure 9: Mobile App Workflow.

For the development of the mobile app, we have considered the following
factors.
• Real-time Information: An intuitive user interface that displays real-
time information about bike availability, station locations, ride history,
and analytics is very critical in building the project successfully and
delivering services successfully.
• User Authentication: Implementing a secure user authentication system,
possibly using secure login credentials is required to safeguard the user
data.
• Cross-Platform Compatibility: Opting for a cross-platform
development framework is required so that it enables us to build the app
for multiple operating systems, such as iOS and Android, using a single
codebase.
• API Integration: Connecting the app to a backend server that provides
real-time data about bike availability, station locations, and other relevant
information is also a crucial element to ensure that there is no break in the
communication channel throughout
• Push Notifications: Keeping in mind the customer’s hurry to reach their
destination Implementing push notifications to alert users about important
updates, such as successful bike booking, ride completion, or system
maintenance is very important so that any communication is not missed
out by the customer due to any reason.

Considering all these factors we have contacted multiple agencies for

potential developers but considering our budget constraints we also spoke to
freelancers who have a good track record of building apps on cross
platforms. After careful consideration, we have found a freelancer who has a
good record in her past projects and has signed her up for the project.
The timeline as mutually agreed was 60 days to complete the development
and 10 days for testing the application on both the emulator and Android,
and iOS devices. As for both development and testing the cost comes down
to ₹80,000 along with all the features that we need for the success of the
project.
