Step by step approach to learn Software Testing

1. Know what is testing, what the skills required for testing and when testing is needed
a. My opinion for one of the skills required for testing – thinking power and better
understanding of project/system.
2. Know different types of testing
3. What are test cases, use cases, test scenarios, test plan, traceability matrix, bug reports
4. Formats/templates for all the points mentioned in #3.
5. Additional knowledge on Oracle, SQL or any database. Simple query building should be fine.
Concepts of database
6. Additional knowledge on Unix, basic commands should be fine
7. Concepts of client server and web server applications, SDLC (software development life cycle)
and STLC (software testing life cycle)
8. Automation testing knowledge using any one of the automation tool i.e. functional testing tool
9. Additional knowledge on performance testing, any tool should be fine.
10. Nevertheless Communication skills little higher. Testers need to talk more with client and
business users.
11. Knowledge on domains like Retail, Insurance, Finance, Banking, Ecommerce, Trading. For e.g.
finance, banking and insurance domains are priorities to get job in UK. Any domain should be
fine to get job in India unless we choose selected companies

Note:

 Selenium is the important functional testing tool in coming future coz it is open source tool (no
need to pay)
 QTP is current market leading functional test tool in any part of the world
 JMeter is the open source tool which is used for performance testing.
 Load Runner is the leading performance test tool in current market
