The Crucified Flesh
Galatians 5:24-25

Ga. 5:13-15 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but
through love serve one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15
But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

Ga. 5:16-18 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are
against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from
doing the things you want to do.

Ga. 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity,
strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn
you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Ga. 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-
control; against such things there is no law.

Ga. 5:24-25 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by
the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

I. Union with Christ

Ga. 3:26-27 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ
have put on Christ.

Eph 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual
blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy
and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to
the purpose of his will,

Eph 1:6-7 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption
through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

Ro 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Eph 1:11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all
things according to the counsel of his will.

1 Co 12:13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to
drink of one Spirit.

Eph 2:5-7 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been
saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming
ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

Col 2:9-10 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all
rule and authority.

Salvation and all the blessings associated with it are found only in Christ and become ours only when we are united with
Him.

The Covenant of Redemption was made between the Father and the Son, for man was not directly and primarily a party to
it. As Christ fulfilled the conditions of this covenant, so all the blessings that the covenant secured were bestowed upon Him
and continue in His possession.

the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit

II. New Identity in Christ

Identity is an image of one’s self through which a person views himself and his life.

By becoming a Christian, a person is united with Christ and acquires a new identity in Him.

Ga. 3:26-28 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ
have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you
are all one in Christ Jesus.

the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit

A. How do we acquire a new identity in Christ?

Ro 6:3-4 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were
buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the
Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

Ro 6:5-7 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like
his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we
would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin

We are not baptized into His example or His life, but into His death. We hereby confess that all our salvation lies in the
death of Jesus, which death we accept as having been incurred on our account… You are so one with Jesus that you must
regard His death as your death.1

My burial with Christ means not only that He died for me, but also that I died in Him, so that my death with Him needs a
burial with Him. Jesus died for us because He is one with us. 2

Ro 6:8-10 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised
from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once
for all, but the life he lives he lives to God.

Our old legal life has been taken from us by the sentence of the Law, and the Law views us as dead; but now we have
received a new life, a life out of death, resurrection —life in Christ Jesus. The life of the Christian is the life of Christ. 3

Phil 3:7-8 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of
the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as
rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ

B. How do we live with this new identity in Christ?

Ga. 2:19-20 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no
longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved
me and gave himself for me.

1. Consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God

Ro 6:10-11 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must
consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Col 3:1-3 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand
of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is
hidden with Christ in God.

 2. Do not present your members to sin, but present yourselves to God

Ro 6:12-13 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members
to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to
life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.

Present as instruments of righteousness in the service of God:

● Your attention
● Your thoughts
● your feelings
● your desires
● your memory
● your creativity
● your hearing
● your eyes
● Your physical strength
● your hands
● your legs
● Your body
