What is a Ratio?
A ratio is a way of comparing two quantities of the same kind.
It tells us how much of one thing there is compared to another.
Example
If there are 4 boys and 2 girls, the ratio of boys to girls is:
4:2
We read this as "4 to 2."
Writing Ratios
Ratios can be written in three ways:
3:5
Comparing Quantities
Example
There are:
8 pencils
2 rulers
Ratio of pencils to rulers
=8:2
Ratio of rulers to pencils
=2:8
Remember: The order is important.
Finding the Missing Number
Example
The ratio of cats to dogs is 2 : 3.
There are 4 cats.
How many dogs are there?
Step 1 Step 2
2 parts = 4 cats 1 part = 4 ÷ 2 = 2
Step 3
Dogs = 3 parts
3 × 2 = 6 dogs Answer: 6 dogs
Sharing in a Ratio
Example
Share 15 sweets in the ratio 2 : 3.
Step 1
Add the parts.
2 + 3 = 5 parts
Step 2
Find one part.
15 ÷ 5 = 3
Step 3
Multiply.
First share:
2 × 3 = 6 sweets
Second share:
3 × 3 = 9 sweets
Answer: 6 sweets and 9 sweets.
