SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS
AND THE STEPS OF A SIMPLE
SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION
Science 5- week 5
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:
✅ Identify the six science process skills.
✅ Describe the four steps of a simple scientific
✅
investigation.
✅
Arrange the investigation steps in the correct order.
Appreciate the importance of following scientific
procedures.

Guide Questions
What is Science?
Why do scientists investigate?
Have you ever done a simple experiment?

WHAT ARE SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS?
Science process skills are the tools scientists use to
investigate and solve problems.
✔
They help us:
✔
Observe carefully
✔
Gather information
✔
Make conclusions
Solve problems
SCIENCE PROCESS SKILL #1
Observing
Using your five senses to gather information.
Example
"The ice cube is cold."
👀 👂
We use:
👃 ✋
Eyes Ears
👅
Nose Hands
Tongue
SCIENCE PROCESS SKILL #2
Measuring
Finding the size, length, weight, or amount
using measuring tools.
📏
Examples
⚖
Pencil = 15 cm
🌡
Apple = 200 grams
Water = 30°C
SCIENCE PROCESS SKILL #3
Classifying
Grouping objects according to similar
characteristics.
Example
Red leaves
Green leaves
Yellow leaves
SCIENCE PROCESS SKILL #4
Inferring
Making a logical explanation based on
observations.
Example
Observation:
The ground is wet.
Inference:
"It probably rained."
SCIENCE PROCESS SKILL #5
Predicting
Making an educated guess about what will
happen.
Example
"If the ice stays under the sun, it will melt."
SCIENCE PROCESS SKILL #6
Communicating
✔
Sharing information through:
✔
Speaking
✔
Writing
✔
Tables
✔
Graphs
Drawings

WHAT IS SCIENTIFIC
INVESTIGATION?
A scientific investigation is a step-by-step
way of solving a problem by gathering
evidence.
Scientists investigate instead of guessing.
FOUR STEPS OF SCIENTIFIC
INVESTIGATION
1️⃣ Identify the Problem
2️⃣ Gather the Materials
3️⃣ Follow the Procedure
4️⃣ Record the Results and Conclusion
FOUR STEPS OF SCIENTIFIC
INVESTIGATION
What is the Problem?
The question you want to answer.
Examples
Why did the ice melt?
Why did the plant wilt?
Which paper airplane flies the farthest?

Example
"The ice cube under the sun melted faster
because of heat."

The Mysterious Case of the Disappearing Ice Cubes
Story
One sunny afternoon, Mia placed two ice cubes on separate plates. She
left one ice cube inside the classroom and the other outside under the hot
sun.
After 20 minutes, Mia returned to check the ice cubes.
She noticed that the ice cube outside had completely melted, while the one
inside the classroom was still partly frozen.
Mia became curious and asked,
"Why did the ice cube outside melt faster?"

🧊
The Mysterious Case of the Disappearing Ice Cubes
Story
To find the answer, she gathered these materials:
2 ice cubes
2 plates
A timer
A notebook
She repeated the activity several times and carefully observed what happened.
Each time, the ice cube under the sun melted much faster than the one inside the
classroom.
Finally, Mia concluded that heat from the sun caused the ice cube to melt faster.
LET'S ANALYZE THE STORY
