5. Answer the following questions in brief:
a. What are the properties of solids?
Answer: The properties of solids are:
i. It has a definite shape.
ii. It does not flow.
iii. It occupies space (has volume).
b. What are the properties of liquids?
Answer: The properties of liquids are:
i. It has no definite shape.
ii. It has a definite volume.
iii. It can flow from one place to another.
c. Why is air considered a matter even though we cannot see it?
Answer: Air is considered a matter because it has weight and occupies space, even though we cannot see it.
It resists the application of pressure.
d. What is rust?
Answer: Rust is a reddish-brown substance that forms on iron when it reacts with oxygen in the presence of
water. It is a chemical change.
e. What is a chemical change?
Answer: A chemical change is a process in which one or more substances change to form new substances
with different properties. For example, burning paper ,burning of a candle.
f. What is matter? How many states of matter are there?
Answer: Matter is anything that has weight and occupies space. There are three states of matter: solid,
liquid, and gas.
g. What are the properties of matter?
Answer: The special characteristics of matter are called its properties of matter. Weight, shape, size, and
volume are the examples of properties of matter.
6. Answer the following questions in detail.
a) What is chemical change of matter? Give three examples of chemical changes of matter.
Answer: The process in which one or more substances combine to form one or more different substances is
called a chemical change. Three examples of chemical changes are:
i. Burning of paper: It is a chemical change because paper turns into new substances like ash and smoke.
ii. Rusting of iron: It is a chemical change because iron reacts with air and forms a new substance called
rust.
iii. Ripening of fruit: It is a chemical change because the fruit changes in taste, colour, and smell.
These changes cannot be reversed and form new substances.
b) Explain the uses of water in its solid, liquid and gaseous states in our daily lives.
Answer: Water is very important because we use it in all three forms every day in our homes and daily life.
The uses of water in different states in our daily life are given below:
i. Solid (Ice):
We use ice to make food like ice cream.
We use ice as first aid.
It is also used to preserve food.
ii. Liquid (Water):
We drink water to stay healthy.
Water is used for cooking food, washing clothes, cleaning, and bathing.
Farmers use water to grow crops.
iii. Gaseous:
Steam is used for cooking food.
It helps in drying clothes.
Water vapour forms cloud, and cloud bring rain.
c. Distinguish between the three states of matter, such as solid, liquid, and gas,
based on their properties.
Answer:Everything around us is made of matter. Matter usually exists in three main states: solid, liquid or
gas.
