THE RESILIENT MILL

SKALMC's Climate Crisis

A Boardroom Drama Inspired by Real Corporate Decisions
(The room is silent. Everyone looks tense. A TV screen flashes breaking news.)
"BREAKING NEWS: Severe El Niño Expected to Reduce Rice Production in
Mindanao by 35% This Year."
(Everyone stares at the screen.)
The CEO slowly turns it off.
Silence.

ACT 1 — THE CRISIS

Board Member (Karyl)
(serious tone)
"This isn't just another board meeting.
Yesterday, our largest investor demanded to know how our company plans to survive
the worsening climate crisis.
Banks are questioning whether we're still worth financing.
If we fail to present a credible Sustainability Report under PFRS S1 and PFRS S2, we
risk losing investor confidence.
Francine...
Tell us one thing.
Is this company prepared... or are we simply buying time?"
(Everyone looks at the CEO.)

CEO (Francine)
(takes a deep breath)
"I wish I could say we're fully prepared.
But the truth is...
We're not."
(Everyone exchanges worried looks.)
"This year's El Niño destroyed thousands of hectares of rice fields across Sultan
Kudarat.
Some of our partner farmers harvested less than half of what they expected.
Last month alone...
our mills operated below capacity."
(pause)
"And if the weather worsens...
our business model may no longer work."
(Silence.)

Investor (Mariel)
(leans forward)
"So what you're saying...
is that the company I've invested millions in...
depends entirely on the weather?"

CEO
"No.
It depends on the decisions we make today."

ACT 2 — THE PLAN

Board Member
"Raycel...
You've spent months studying our climate risks.
Tell us, exactly how serious is this?"

Sustainability Officer (Raycel)

(stands and walks toward the presentation screen.)
"The risks are no longer theoretical.
They're happening now."
(Slides appear showing flooded roads and dry rice fields.)
"Under PFRS S2, we identified two major threats."
"First...
Physical risks."
(Points to flooded highway.)
"Floods stop our trucks from reaching General Santos Port.
Every delayed shipment means lost revenue."
(Next slide.)
"Drought.
Less rainfall means fewer rice deliveries."
"Our mills cannot process grain that never arrives."
(Changes slide.)
"Second...
Transition risks."
"If the government imposes stricter environmental regulations...
and we're still relying on diesel-powered operations...
our costs will increase dramatically."
(Looks around the room.)
"So this isn't only an environmental issue.
It's a financial issue."

Investor
"So how much is this going to cost us?"

ACT 3 — THE NUMBERS

CFO (Maricris)
(opens financial reports.)
"A lot."
(Silence.)
"Installing solar systems...
modernizing our dryers...
and upgrading our logistics network...
will require nearly ₱20 million over the next three years."

Investor
(raises voice slightly)
"Twenty million pesos?"
"How do you expect shareholders to approve that?"

CFO
"Because doing nothing will cost us even more."
(Everyone becomes quiet.)
"If droughts continue...
electricity prices rise...
and harvests decline...
our operating costs will continue increasing."
"We're not spending money because sustainability is popular."
"We're investing...
because survival has become expensive."

CEO
"Exactly."

ACT 4 — THE AUDITOR'S WARNING

Auditor (Rian)
(finally speaks.)
"I need everyone's attention."
(The room becomes silent.)
"I've reviewed the report."
"There is one issue."
(Everyone freezes.)

CEO
"What issue?"

Auditor
"Our Scope 3 emissions."

CFO
"What about them?"
Auditor
"The disclosures are incomplete."
(Everyone looks shocked.)

Sustainability Officer
"We're still collecting data from hundreds of farmers."

Auditor
"I understand.
PFRS S2 allows transition relief.
But if investors believe we're hiding information...
they'll call it greenwashing."

Investor
"And if I think you're greenwashing..."
(leans back)
"I walk away."

(Silence fills the room.)

ACT 5 — THE DECISION

Board Member
"So here's the real question."
(Looks at everyone.)
"Do we delay this report...
protect this year's profits...
and hope investors don't notice...
or do we disclose everything—
including the risks—
and face the consequences?"

(Everyone remains silent.)

CEO
"I became CEO to build this company.
Not to hide the truth."
"We disclose everything."
"The good...
the bad...
and the uncertainties."

CFO
"I support the CEO."
Sustainability Officer
"So do I."

Auditor
"Then I can confidently state...
that the report complies with PFRS S1 and PFRS S2, fairly presenting the company's
material sustainability and climate-related information."

Investor
(smiles slightly.)
"You know...
I came here prepared to sell my shares."
(Everyone looks surprised.)
"But today...
I saw something more valuable than short-term profit."
"I saw transparency."
"And that's exactly why..."
(extends her hand toward the CEO.)
"I'm staying."

FINAL SCENE
Board Member
"Then I move that the Board approve the company’s Sustainability-related Financial
Disclosure."

CFO
"I second the motion."

Board Member
"All in favor?"
(Everyone slowly raises their hands.)

CEO
(looks around the room.)
"The motion carries."
"Climate change may threaten our harvests...
but it will never threaten our integrity."
"We don't build resilient companies by predicting the future."
"We build them by preparing for it."

(The lights dim as everyone signs the sustainability report. The screen behind them
displays:)
"SKALMC Sustainability Report Approved."
"Prepared in accordance with PFRS S1 and PFRS S2."
[End]
