Chapter I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Peer pressure is a powerful social force that significantly influences
students' decision-making processes, particularly during adolescence and young
adulthood. This developmental stage is marked by a heightened sensitivity to social
relationships and a strong desire for acceptance and belonging. As a result, students
often make choices that align with group norms or peer expectations, sometimes
prioritizing these over their own values, beliefs, or better judgment. It highlights
the psychological factors influencing decision making particularly the human need
for social acceptance and fear of rejection.
Early studies primarily focused on how peer pressure encourages academic
motivation. According to Burgess, S., & Umaña-Aponte, M. (2019) demonstrated
that students surrounded by high-performing peers are more likely to increase their
own academic efforts. The research supports the idea that peer pressure does not
always lead to negative outcomes but can serve as a motivator for constructive
academic decisions. Found that students tend to conform to group norms, and when
those norms support academic excellence or moral behavior, students are more
likely to make positive decisions. The study concludes that peer groups with strong
positive values can mitigate risk behaviors and encourage pro-social outcomes.
These are the information that have gathered in the literature review of
foreign studies. While in the Philippines, found very high peer influence correlated
with stronger motivation, material better class participation and increase learning
interest Maryknoll School (2023, Davao Oriental). It proves that peers improve
students’ academic performance, self-confidence, and decision making. Students
are more motivated when surrounded by positive peer groups.
While much of the literature explores peer influence as a risk factor, fewer
studies highlight its role in fostering positive decision-making among adolescents,
particularly in the senior high school context. Existing studies often emphasize the
negative effects of peer influence (e.g., substance abuse, risky behavior). There is
less emphasis on how peer influence contributes to positive behaviors (e.g.,
academic motivation, community involvement, ethical decisions). There is a gap in
research exploring how peer relationships and interactions contributes to positive
behaviors.
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that peers have a positive impact
on students’ motivation to learn and their interactions within the school
environment. It also recommends the promotion of positive peer influence, as this
can enhance students’ enthusiasm for personal and academic growth. Many
researchers have explored similar topics and possess relevant experience in this
area. This study was conducted to understand the concept of peer pressure and how
it contributes to shaping positive decision-making among students at Bani National
High School, particularly those in Senior High School. Ultimately, the study aims
to help educators, future researchers, and students recognize the value of peer
influence as a powerful tool for fostering a more encouraging and supportive
learning environment.
