Any other questions?
What is Statistics? (An example)
● Suppose you’re researching dog breeds because you want to get a puppy
● One factor that goes into the decision of what kind of puppy to get is size:
We want to know how big a puppy will get as an adult

All dogs of this breed

What is Statistics? (An example)
● We can’t measure the size of all dogs: (Why not?)

● Collect sizes about some (a sample) of the dogs

A sample of dogs of this breed

What is Statistics? (An example)
● Statistics involves:
○ How we collect the samples (Sampling)
○ How we present and describe the sample (Descriptive Statistics)
○ How we learn from the sample (Inferential Statistics)

● The whole process involves a bunch of uncertainty, and so we need to have

a good understanding of probability (the math behind uncertain things) to
describe what’s going on.
