Session 1: Problem Setting
Defining the problem
o The new batch that has just taken admission in the Institute
o ‘Problem’:
▪ Program Office has a task to decide the ‘academic quality’ of the batch for academic and
placement training purpose…
Defining the problem
o Decision-making approaches:
▪ HiPPO Approach : Subjective approach
▪ Data Driven Decision Making Approach : Objective approach
Defining the problem
o Real life decision-making ‘problems’ are ill-defined
o Defining the problems:
▪ Identifying the ‘features’/ ‘variables’/ ‘parameters’…..
Defining the problem
o Academic Quality:
▪ 10th score
▪ 12th score
▪ Graduation score
▪ Entrance examination score
▪ Gender
▪ Graduation subject-stream
Defining the problem
o Data:
▪ Information vs Numbers
o Collection of data on the features:
▪ Metric data vs Non-metric data
▪ Primary data vs Secondary data
▪ Census vs Sample
o Why ‘STATISTICS’???????
Statistics
o Data processing:
▪ Purpose
▪ To draw meaningful information from a large mass of data
▪ Making the data ‘useful’
▪ Scientifics process of transforming “data” into “insights” for having “better” decisions
Arranging Data
o Information before it is arranged and analyzed is called raw data because it is seldom
directly useful.
o Purpose:
▪ To convert raw data to useful information by picking out meaningful pattern in the
data and coming to the logical conclusions.
o Arranging Data:
▪ Using Data Array
▪ Using Frequency Distribution
Thank You!
