1.2 REVIEW OF EARLIER STUDIES (LITERATURE REVIEW)

Analysing the past snadies with the help of formulating a good frame work for the
present study. Many studies have been made in the field of brand preference of mobile
phones users

Literature pertaining to the study as follows:

Sriram,Chintagunta and Neelamgham (2004) found that inminsic brand

preference have a much bigger effect on the performance of the brand than the incitaive
value which reflects model level prices, product attributes, and the length of the brand's
product line. Further they found that some brands can increase their advertising
expenditure and still increase theit profitability.

Ayanwala, Alimi and Ayanbimipe (2005) quoted that brand preference does
exist in the food drink industry Many consumers do not buy whatever is available or
affordable if a product is good value for us price, it will command brand loyality
However advertising help the projects product quality and value before the customers

DelVeccio, Henard, Freling (2006) quoted that sales promotion has neither a
positive nor a negative effect on brand preference beyond the promotion period while the
overall mean effect is not statistically significant this does not suggest that sales
promotion does not affect brand preference. Consistent with the notion that multiple
mechanisms may affect brand preference. Sale promotion either undermines or argues
brand preference depending on the promotion and characteristics of the product being
promoted.

Chen and chang (2008) found that Irand equity has a significantly positive effect
on the brand on boch brand preference and brand loyalty. The effect of brand equity on
purchase intention in also significant,

Paulo, Durate and Mario (2010) quoted that several factor contributes to brand
preference, especially those related to brand identity personality and image and there
congruence with consumer self image the main direct effect on brand preference are the
self image congruence and the identity and personality and the image of the. In addition
to those, the level of involvement, social environment, risk perception, demographie
profile and product visibilny also show a positive influence on brand preferenze

Bronnenberg, Dube, and Mathew (2010)wrote that much of consumers

observed willingness to pay for brands may reflect the influence of past experiences
Heterogeneity in the brand capital explains a substantial slure of geographic variation in
parchases Brand capital evolves endogenously as a function of customer's life histories,
and decays slowly once formed brand capital can explain large and long lasting
advamages to first mover. Brand preferences play an especially important role in
categories with high levels of advertising and social visibility.

Questionnaire was the research instrument used in the project. Some of the
features of the questionnaire was as follows:-

1. A questionnaire is a structured tool with questions arranged in a logical sequence.

2. It utilizes closed-ended questions, providing predefined answer options for efficient

data analysis.

3. Open-ended questions allow respondents to provide detailed, free-form responses.

4. The language used in questions is clear and concise to minimize ambiguity for
respondents.

5. Questions are framed objectively and unbiasedly to maintain the integrity of collected
data.

There are 16 Variables, 58 Statement wise questions and 7 Multiple choice

questions (including Yes or No)

1.11 THE POPULATION AND SAMPLE SIZE

The population for the study is comprised on all people in Konni Panchayath who
posses a mobile phones .It includes both male and female. For this purpose random
sampling method is used. Sample Size of the study is 30. Data was collected from 30
respondent in Konni Panchayath by random sampling method.

1.12 METHOD OF SAMPLING

Simple random sampling is selected as the method of sampling. Here each

individual is choose randomly. Out of the total population 30 respondents are selected for
the study.
1.13 TYPES OF ANALYSIS AND STATISTICAL TOOLS

The data collected is represented in forms of tables, charts and pie diagrams.

These are analysed by using various statistical tools like Percentages, Arithmetic
mean, Standared deviation, Coefficient of variation etc....

Percentage

Percentage =No. of respondents / Total sample*100

Arithmetic mean

The arithmetic mean, also known as the average, is a measure of central tendency
calculated by adding up all the values in a dataset and dividing by the total number of
values.

It provides a central value around which data points tend to cluster, helping to
summarize the overall trend or average performance of a project.

It helps in assessing the variability or dispersion of project outcomes.

Standared deviation

Standard deviation is a measure of the dispersion or spread of a set of data points

around the mean (average). It indicates how much individual data points deviate from the
mean value. A smaller standard deviation suggests that most data points are close to the
mean, while a larger standard deviation indicates that the data points are more spread out.

It helps in assessing the variability or dispersion of project outcomes.

Coefficient of variation

The coefficient of variation (CV) is a statistical measure used to quantify the

relative variability of a dataset compared to its mean. A lower coefficient of variation is
generally preferred when seeking stability or consistency, while a higher coefficient of
variation may indicate greater risk or uncertainty.
CV = Standard deviation/Arithmetic Mean *100

It helps in identifying which projects have more consistent performance relative

to their mean values.

1.14 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

1. The main drawback of the study is lack of sufficient [Link] topic under
the studies very vast and much information is required

2. The sample survey with the respondents are restricted to 30

3. Respondents do not reveal the accurate details.

4. Scope of the study was limited to Konni Pancgayath

5. The study does not consider variations in product versions during the research period,
it might overlook the influence of changes in features or performance on consumer
satisfaction

6. Consumer satisfaction being a subjective measure, the study may not fully encompass
the diverse criteria individuals use to evaluate smartphones, potentially limiting the depth
of the analysis

7. Factors outside the scope of the study, such as economic conditions or technological
advancements, could independently affect consumer satisfaction, not accounted for in the
comparative analysis.

8. Geographical variations in consumer preferences may not be adequately addressed,

potentially restricting the study's applicability to specific regions rather than a global
context.
