MODBUS COMMUNICATION - COMPLETE NOTES
1. History: Modbus was developed in 1979 by Modicon for industrial communication between PLCs
and devices.
2. What is Modbus: It is a communication protocol used to exchange data between PLC, VFD,
sensors, HMI, and SCADA.
3. Why Use Modbus: To connect devices, reduce wiring, monitor data, and control industrial
systems.
4. Types of Modbus:
- Modbus RTU (RS485, fast, most used)
- Modbus ASCII (slow, text-based)
- Modbus TCP/IP (Ethernet-based, high speed)
5. Advantages:
- Free and open protocol
- Easy to implement
- Widely supported
- Reliable communication
6. Disadvantages:
- No security
- Limited speed
- Not suitable for large systems
7. Working Principle:
- Master sends request
- Slave processes request
- Slave sends response
8. Message Structure:
- Slave Address
- Function Code
- Data
- CRC (error checking)
9. Important Function Codes:
01 Read Coils
03 Read Holding Register
06 Write Single Register
16 Write Multiple Registers
10. Communication Parameters:
- Baud Rate
- Parity
- Stop Bits
- Slave ID
11. Applications:
- PLC to VFD control
- SCADA systems
- Energy meters
