Lab Assignment
Arc Welding
Aim – To learn arc welding processes, welding
equipment and practice by making various joints.

 Tools required : Hand gloves, protective screen,

helmet, scratch brush, work holding fixture.
 Machine required : MMAW- Manual Metal Arc
Welding.
 Material required : MS flat- 75*50*5mm[2 pieces],
MS welding electrodes[3.15mm].
Welding-Welding is a fabrication process that joins
materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by using high
heat to melt the parts together and allowing them to cool,
causing fusion. Welding is distinct from lower temperature
metal-joining techniques such as brazing and soldering,
which do not melt the base metal.
Arc welding- Arc welding is a welding process that is used to
join metal to metal by using electricity to create enough
heat to melt metal, and the melted metals, when cool,
result in a binding of the metals. It is a type of welding that
uses a welding power supply to create an electric arc
between a metal stick electrode and the base material to
melt the metals at the point of contact. Arc welders can use
either direct (DC) or alternating (AC) current, and
consumable or non-consumable electrodes.

An arc is generated between two conductors of electricity,

cathode and anode, when they are touched to establish the
flow of current and then separated by a small distance. An
arc is a sustained electric discharge through the ionised gas
column called plasma between the two electrodes.
There are five basic welding joint types
commonly used in the industry:
 Butt joint.
 Tee joint.
 Corner joint.
 Lap joint.
 Edge joint.
