COURSE CODE: BCV755A COURSE TITLE : Road Safety Engineering

The course Road Safety Engineering (BCV755A) is designed to provide an in-depth focus on
improving road safety through a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses various aspects of
traffic management and design. It begins with investigations and risk management, which involve
collecting and analyzing accident data to identify hazardous locations, understand crash causes,
and implement effective safety countermeasures, including accident reconstruction and safety
design evaluation. Traffic engineering studies apply statistical methods, such as regression
analysis and Poisson distribution, to analyze traffic safety and assess the impact of management
measures on accident prevention.
The course also emphasizes road safety in transport planning and geometric design by integrating
vehicle and human factors into road layouts. Enhancements include redesigning junctions,
improving road cross-sections, implementing traffic calming measures, and incorporating safety
furniture to reduce risks. The role of signs and markings is highlighted as critical to guiding
traffic and reducing accidents through proper design and installation. Additionally, traffic
management systems focus on road safety audits, tools for safety management, improvement
strategies, and adopting Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to enhance overall safety.
Together, these elements form a holistic and effective approach to improving road safety and
preventing accidents.
COURSE CODE: BCV755B COURSETITLE: Conservation of Natural Resources
The course Conservation of Natural Resources (BCV755B) provides a comprehensive
understanding of natural resources and environmental concerns, beginning with the study of land
as a critical resource. It delves into various land types, the conservation of landforms, and the
effects of deforestation and land-use changes. The importance of soil health, its ecological and
economic significance, and the impact of soil degradation on agriculture and food security are
highlighted, emphasizing the need for soil conservation and sustainable land-use planning. The
focus then shifts to water resources, exploring global and Indian water systems, their usage in
domestic, industrial, and agricultural sectors, and the challenges of equitable distribution. Topics
such as inter-basin water transfers, river interlinking, groundwater potential, recharge techniques,
and solutions to contamination and sea-water ingress are also covered.
Air pollution is introduced through its sources, classification, and adverse effects on human
health and the economy. The course addresses air quality standards, indices, and methods of
pollution control, including discussions on ozone depletion and related photo chemical changes.

COURSE CODE: BCV755D COURSE TITLE: Precast Members – Systems &

Construction
The course Precast Members – Systems & Construction (BCV755D) provides a comprehensive
understanding of precast concrete technology and its applications in modern construction. It
covers the planning, selection, design, production, transportation, handling, and erection of
precast concrete elements such as beams, slabs, walls, columns, staircases, foundations, and
façade systems used in residential, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects.
The course also focuses on various precast structural systems, production methodologies, quality
control practices, and logistics involved in precast Construction. Students learn the modeling,
analysis, detailing, and design of precast buildings using industry – standard software such as
ETABS, including load assessment, structural behaviour, and connection design. In addition, the
course covers precast wall and frame systems, prestressed concrete applications, construction
safety measures, common defects and remedial actions, along with real-world case studies,
enabling students to develop the skills required for efficient and sustainable precast building
design and construction.

COURSE CODE: BME755A COURSE TITLE: Introduction to Non-Traditional Machining

Overview
Non-Traditional Machining (NTM), also known as Unconventional Machining, refers to a group
of processes that remove material from a work piece using non-mechanical methods. These
methods are particularly useful for machining hard, brittle, and complex materials, and for
producing intricate shapes that are difficult or impossible to achieve with conventional
machining techniques.

Need for Non-Traditional Machining

 Limitations of traditional machining (tool wear, material hardness, complex geometry)
 Growing use of advanced materials (ceramics, composites, heat-resistant alloys)
 Demand for precision, miniaturization, and complex profiles

Advantages of NTM
 Can machine very hard and brittle materials
 Suitable for micromachining and intricate shapes
 No mechanical contact → no tool wear in some processes
 High precision and control Limitations
 High cost and complexity of equipment
 Often slower than traditional methods
 Limited material suitability depending on the process
 Requires skilled operators and safety measures

Applications
 Aerospace and defence components
 Medical devices (stents, implants)
 Electronics (microchips, PCBs)
 Tool and die making
 Automotive industry (fuel injectors, precision parts)

Conclusion
Non-Traditional Machining has become essential for modern manufacturing industries due to the
increasing demand for complex geometry, high precision, and advanced materials. A strong
understanding of NTM processes enables engineers to choose the right method based on material
type, geometry, and production requirements.
