1. Development
Development means improvement in the quality of life of people.
Different people have different development goals.
Examples of Development Goals:
• Better income
• Equal treatment
• Freedom
• Security
• Respect
• Good education and healthcare
Exam Question: What is development?
Answer: Development is the process of improving people's quality of life by fulfilling their needs
and aspirations.

2. Different People, Different Goals


A farmer wants better irrigation and higher crop prices.
A student wants good education and employment.
A worker wants higher wages and job security.
Important Point: Development goals may differ and even conflict.

3. Income and Other Goals


Development is not only about income.
Other important goals:
• Equal treatment
• Freedom
• Security
• Respect
• Healthy environment
Exam Tip: Income alone cannot measure development.

4. National Development
National development means improving the overall well-being of all citizens.
It includes:
• Economic growth
• Education
• Health
• Equality
• Employment

5. Per Capita Income


Formula: Per Capita Income = Total Income of the Country ÷ Total Population
Used to compare countries.
Higher per capita income generally indicates a higher average income.

6. Human Development Index (HDI)


HDI measures development based on:
• Health (Life expectancy)
• Education
• Per capita income
Important: HDI is a better measure than income alone.

7. Sustainable Development
Development that meets present needs without harming the ability of future generations to meet
their own needs.
Examples:
• Save forests
• Use renewable energy
• Reduce pollution
• Conserve water
