INTRODUCTION
● Self-management, which is also referred to as ‘self-control’ or ‘self-regulation’, is the
ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviour effectively in different
situations.
● Self-management involves understanding yourself, understanding what your interests and
abilities are, having a positive attitude and grooming yourself in order to develop
self-confidence.

● Guides self-monitoring of behavior
● Builds responsibility and proactiveness
● Encourages task independence
● Instills ownership and accountability
● Promotes self-evaluation and course correction
● Helps set and achieve personal goals

Self-management skills include the following factors:
● Self-Awareness: It means knowing yourself as an individual – your values, likes,
dislikes, strengths and weaknesses.
● Self-Control: It is the ability to control your behaviour,discipline etc.
● Self-Confidence: It means believing in yourself that you can do any task that is given to
you and not being scared of taking risks.
● Problem-Solving: It means understanding a problem and finding a solution using
step-by-step methods.
● Self-Motivation: It means doing tasks on your own without any external motivation. ●
Personal Hygiene and Grooming: It means keeping oneself clean, healthy and smart.
● Positive Thinking: It means expressing certainty or affirmation even in tough situations. ●
Teamwork: It means working together with people to accomplish shared goals. ● Time
Management: It means achieving tasks on time and according to the plan. ● Goal Setting:
It means planning concrete goals to be accomplished within a set time frame.

Knowing yourself: To find strengths and weaknesses
Strengths and weaknesses help to analyze yourself, knowing about yourself, what makes you
happy, trying to find the area of improvement, what your opinions are, etc.

● Strength – Strengths are what we do well and are good at. Everyone has some
strengths.
● Weaknesses – Weaknesses, also known as ‘areas of improvement’ are what we do
not do well and are not good at. Everyone has some weaknesses too.
Identifying strengths –

● Think of anything that you are always good at
● Think about what others appreciate about you

● Point out the areas where you struggle and what you find difficult to do
● Look at the feedback you receive from others

that they can do anything given to them in any situation.

Confidence comes with knowledge and attitude. It is an age-long process of knowing yourself. If
you are aware of your tasks, there will be very less chances of failure and this force is big enough
to motivate you.

● Hard work: A confident person works hard. He is aware of the fact that if nothing else,

● Self-belief: Believing in yourself helps you trust your abilities, qualities, and judgement.

● Committed: Commitment means no excuses, only results. The more committed you are,

● Focused: Focus helps you transform, improve, and grow. Staying focused makes you
more confident over time.
● Knows strengths and weaknesses: A confident person understands their strengths and
weaknesses and focuses more on strengths rather than weaknesses.
Building self-confidence
The three steps to building self-confidence are as follows –

Positive-thinking people have a positive attitude towards life and its challenges. A
positive-thinking person looks at the good in things and works towards improving them rather
than worrying and/or looking for the bad in things.

Cultural factors comprise of values, beliefs and customs. A culture is passed on to the
next generation by learning and practice. Religion, language, moral value, tradition,
dresses, food, customs,festivals, climate, etc. form part of society’s cultural heritage.
Physical:
Individuals’ self-confidence is considered to be affected by physical self-efficacy,
physical activity, and social physique anxiety. Self-confidence has been proven to be
directly correlated with physical activity.
Personal Hygiene
It is the habit or practice of keeping ourselves clean. Cleanliness helps us to maintain our health
and well-being.
Personal hygiene is important because, it helps us

● Create a good image of ourselves.
● Avoid feeling ashamed in public due to our bad breadth, body odour, etc.
Three steps to personal hygiene –

○ Brush your teeth daily.
○ Rub oil/cream to take care of your skin.
○ Keep your hair free of dandruff.
○ Cut your nails every week.
○ Change your toothbrush as soon as it deshapes.
● Wash
○ Take a proper bath everyday.
○ Wash your hands frequently.
○ Wash your hair at least every second day.
○ Wash your face, feet often.
○ Wash your clothes regularly.

○ Keep your feet dry and change socks regularly
○ Always blow your nose/cough into a handkerchief to avoid spreading germs.
Grooming
Grooming is the process of making yourself look neat, tidy and smart. Dressing and grooming
are important because they help us –

● Clothes should be clean, neat, and ironed
● Shoes should be clean and polished
● Change socks everyday and always wear clean socks ● Hair
