EXAMPLE
Some people believe that studying at university or college is the best route to a
successful career, while others believe that it is better to get a job straight after school.
Discuss both views
ANSWER:
“Graduating from high school, the young often wonder whether they ought to keep on
studying further or not. Many people suppose that continuing to study at university
or college can be the best way to guarantee their successful career, whereas others
believe working right after school is much better.
Working straight after graduation is beneficial in some ways. Firstly, young
people/ the youth/ the juvenile/ youngsters are able to earn money as soon as possible.
If they finish high school, they will be mature enough to live independently on their
own income. It is common sense that having a job can prove one’s maturity.
Secondly, a person who chooses to get a job instead of studying higher is likely to
progress rapidly in their career. This may bring about a good chance to obtain a lot of
real/ hands-on experience and skills for their chosen profession.
On the other hand, there are a variety of reasons why people have a tendency
for/choosing/ tend to choose/ tend to make choices of continuing/ to continue
education after high school. First, a college education will provide young people with
more qualifications, which is what most employers expect these days. University
graduates will probably get a much higher salary than those(people) without
university education. Furthermore, the job market is becoming more and more
competitive. In fact, people would be well-advised to get a degree, as hundreds of
applicants often chase the top jobs. It is an obvious advantage for university graduates.
For example, graduate engineers in Vietnam are highly paid/ are well-paid and find it
easy to get a top job.
In conclusion, it seems evident that both working right after school and choosing to
continue higher study are advantageous in their own ways.

EXAMPLE
In order to solve traffic problems, governments should tax private car owners heavily
and use the money to improve public transportation.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of such a solution?
implement/ impose a measure
ANSWER:
Traffic problems in many cities around the world are becoming more and more
serious. One possible solution to this problem is to impose/ implement heavy taxes on
car drivers and use this money to make public transport better. Such a measure has
its own advantages and disadvantages./ merits and demerits
It is clear that imposing heavy taxes on car drivers has some noteworthy positive
effects. One of the first benefits of such a measure is that the heavy taxes would
discourage car owners from using their cars because it would become very expensive
to drive. This means that they would begin to make use of public transport instead,
thus reducing traffic problems and pollution as well. Another benefit would be that
much more use would be made of public transport if it were improved. It is often the
case that public transport in cities is very poor. For example, we often see old buses
and trains that people would rather not use. High taxes could generate enough money
to make the necessary changes.
Nevertheless, there are drawbacks to such a solution. First, this might be a heavy
burden on the car drivers. At present, taxes are already high for a lot of people, and so
further taxes would only mean less money at the end of the month for most people
who may have no choice but to drive every day. In addition, this type of tax would
likely to be set at a fixed amount, which means that it would hit those with less money
harder, whilst the rich could likely afford it. It is therefore not a fair tax.
In conclusion, this solution is worth considering to improve the current situation, but
there are advantages and disadvantages of introducing such a policy. ( introduce a
law / a policy) ( pass a law)

EXAMPLE
Some people believe that a crime is a result of social problems and poverty,
others think that crime is a result of bad person’s nature. Discuss both views and
give your opinion.
ANSWER
Many people consider that innate characteristics are responsible for the fact that
some people choose to turn to a career of crime/ convict. However, I would argue
that crime is a consequence of social issues and poverty.
There is a belief that a person’s nature determines whether or not they become a
criminal. Firstly, they argue that an individual who is cruel turns to crime more easily
than a kind person. For instance, a child bullying other boys or girls at school
may turn into a violent criminal in the future. Secondly, bad characteristics such as
laziness or selfishness could also breed future offenders, who seek to acquire easy
money without working for it. A number of youngsters choose to steal from others,
instead of working hard to make an honest living. These are strong reasons for
thinking that those who have an inborn bad nature are more likely to break the law.
Nevertheless, it seems to me that social issues and poverty are the main causes
behind crime. There are many problems in society which might lead to/ result in/ give
rise to an increase in the crime rate. For example, unemployment pushes people into
resorting to crime because they simply cannot find a job. As a consequence, the
number of offenders has climbed in many countries over recent decades. Another
reason is that, more broadly, poverty in general leads to a rise in crime. If people do
not have enough money to make ends meet, they will be tempted to pursue illegal
activities just to support themselves and their families.
In conclusion, while a number of people think that a person's nature is the primary/
key/ major/ chief cause of crimes, I would argue that they are the results of social
issues and poverty.

EXAMPLE
Topic: Universities and colleges are now offering qualifications through distance
learning from the Internet rather than teachers in the classroom. Do you think
the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
Model answer:
Thanks to the development of innovative technologies, especially the internet, many
students now can obtain/get/gain verified qualifications through distance learning
programs without having to be present in the traditional classroom. Although the
benefits of this can be clearly seen, I believe that the drawbacks are greater.
One the one hand, distance learning certainly provides students with some major
benefits. Firstly, it brings a wide range of online classes with flexible schedules to
people who find it difficult to attend traditional classes on a regular basis, and this is a
suitable way for them to obtain a higher degree which might be
crucial/critical/vital/necessary/helpful for their future careers. For example,
through/thanks to an innovating online learning system with flexible scheduling and
an unparalleled student support system, University of Phoenix is successfully
targeting/facilitating/helping working professionals who work full-time to effectively
pursue career and professional aspirations while balancing their busy lives. Secondly,
with online classes, there would be no geographical differences among attendees,
meaning that students from almost all places in the world are provided/offered the
same chances to gain a certificate. Finally, studying over the internet is also
economical because distance learners do not have to pay transportation costs, dorm
fees and plenty of other expenses as normal students do.
However, I would argue that these benefits are outweighed by the drawbacks.
The first drawback of online learning would be that online students and professors
have relatively low interaction levels, which may be an obstacle for students to fully
comprehend the lessons. Another drawback/negative effect of distance learning is
that there would be no in-class activities in which participants can not only have
chances to work in a team but also share their thoughts to together overcome an
obstacle assigned by their teachers. For instance, Vietnamese students often prefer
traditional classes to online classes when it comes to learning English because they
tend to grasp new knowledge quicker through in-class activities in which they can
immediately apply what they have learnt in solving a language problem. Therefore,
not all online degrees are globally accepted, meaning that some international
corporations may refuse applicants with online qualifications.
In conclusion, it seems to me that the drawbacks of distance learning are more
significant than the possible benefits.
