Rotating Discs

Q1. A thin disc of outer and inside radii of 300 and 150 mm respectively rotates at
150 rad/sec. Determine the maximum shear stress at the inner and outer
surfaces. Use ρ = 7780 kg/m3, E = 207 GPa and v = 0.3.
Q2. For the problem in question Q1, what speed would cause initial yielding of the
disc if the governing failure criterion is Tresca. SY = 700 MPa.
Q3. A solid steel disc 457 mm in diameter and of a small constant thickness has a
steel ring of outside diameter 610 mm and the same thickness shrunk onto it.
If the interference pressure is reduced to zero at a rotational speed of 3000
rpm, calculate the difference in diameters of the mating surfaces of the disc
and the ring before assembly and the interference pressure. V = 0.29, ρ = 7.7
Mg/m3, E = 207 GPa.
Q4. A steel rotor disc of uniform thickness 50 mm has an outer rim diameter of 750
mm and a central hole of diameter 150 mm. There are 200 blades each
weighing 0.22 kg at an effective radius of 430 mm pitched evenly around the
periphery. Determine the rotational speed at which yielding first occurs
according to Tresca failure criterion. V = 0.29, ρ = 7.3 Mg/m 3, E = 207 GPa.
Q5. A steel ring of outer diameter 300 mm and internal diameter 200 mm is shrunk
onto a solid steel shaft. The interference is arranged such that the radial
pressure between the mating surfaces will not fall below 30 MPa whilst the
assembly rotates in service. If the maximum circumferential stress on the
inside surface of the ring is limited to 240 MPa, determine the maximum speed
at which the assembly can be rotated. It may be assumed that no relative slip
occurs between the shaft and the ring. For steel, ρ = 7470 kg/m3, u = 0.3, E =
208 GPa.
The “bursting“ speed of a cast-iron flywheel rim 3m mean diameter, is 850
rev/min. Neglecting the effects of the spokes and boss and assuming that the
flywheel rim can be considered as a thin rotating hoop, determine the ultimate
tensile strength of the cast iron. Cast iron has a density of 7.3 Mg/m 3.
A flywheel rim is to be made of the same material and is required to rotate at
400 rev/min. Determine the maximum permissible mean diameter using a
factor of safety of 8.
