A sequence is a function
whose domain in the set
of positive integers. It
also means an ordered
list of numbers. Each
number in a sequence is
called a term.
INFINITE SEQUENCE

FINITE SEQUENCE
Example
For each of the following sequences, state a rule and write down the next
two terms.
a) 42, 39, 36, 33, 30,…
b) -22, -18, -14, -10, -6,…
c) 256, 128, 64, 32, 16,…
d) 1, -2, 4, -8, 16,…
What pattern emerges?
1. A school sets a fine of ₱30.00 for the first littering offense. The fine
increases by ₱5.00 for each subsequent offense. How much will the
student be fined for the second offense? Third offense? Sixth offense?
2. The value of an antique coin appreciates by 5% every year. If the coin
was worth ₱50.00 in 1990, find its value in 2007.
3. A certain man put a pair of rabbits in a place surrounded on all sides by a
wall. How many pairs of rabbits can be produced from that pair in a year
if it is supposed that every month each pair begets a new pair which from
the second month on becomes productive?
What pattern emerges?

A sequence is geometric if there
exists a number r, called the
common ratio, such that
multiplying the previous term by r,
results in the next term.
