EXTERNAL PARTS & FUNCTIONS OF THE

HUMAN BODY

Background Information:

What games do you usually play? What parts of your

body move when you play? You are born with many parts that
do different work. The external parts are what you can see
outside the body. The main parts of the body are head, trunk
or torso, and limbs.
Parts of the Head – the head is the topmost part of your body. It is
covered with hair. The area between the eyes and the hair is the
forehead. The head holds most of the sense organs of the body
and the brain. It holds the eyes, ears, nose and tongue. Your teeth
and your tongue are found inside your mouth. The mouth is
surrounded by your lips. Below your mouth is your chin. On either
side of the face below your eyes are your cheeks. The strips of hair
growing on the ridge above a person’s eye is the eyebrow. Each
part of the upper and lower bony structures forming the
framework of the mouth and containing the teeth is the jaw. The
eyes are used for seeing. The nose is used for smelling. The ears
are used for hearing. The tongue is used for tasting. The skin is used
for feeling or touching. The mouth is used for eating and speaking.
Parts of the Trunk or Torso –
The trunk or torso is connected to
your head by the neck. It is
composed of your shoulders,
chest, abdomen, and hips. The
trunk holds the important organs
of your body. The heart and the
lungs are found in your chest.
Other organs in the trunk are the
liver, stomach and kidneys. At the
back of your trunk is your
backbone. Your backbone gives
support and shape to the trunk.
The chest protects the organs.
The stomach stores and breaks down food. The shoulder allows
the arm to rotate. The back protects the spinal cord and carries
the body weight. The abdomen holds and protect the stomach,
liver and kidneys

Parts of the Limbs – Your limbs make your body move.

You have the upper limb and the lower limb. The upper limb
is composed of the upper arms, lower arms, hands, and
fingers. Your upper arm is connected to the lower arm at
the elbow. Your lower arm is connected to your hand at the
wrist. Your fingers are connected to the hands. Your thumb is
your largest finger that helps you grasp or hold anything.

The arms are used to reach and grab anything. The fingers
are used to grip any objects. The hands are used to touch, hold,
grasps and make movements like writing and cooking. The elbows
allow the forearm and hand to move towards and away from the
body. The lower limb is composed of the thighs, lower legs, feet
and toes.

The thigh is connected

to your trunk at the hip. It is
connected to the lower leg
at the knee. Your lower leg is
connected to the foot at
your ankle. Your toes are
connected to your foot. The
leg is the part of the human
body that humans move to
walk. The knees are used for
movement such as bending,
jumping, walking, sitting etc. The ankle allows movements and
stabilizes the lower limb. The feet support your weight and helps
you run, walk, Kick and move from one place to place.

Needs of The Body

Background Information
Do you ever wonder how you grow up? There are many
things that your body needs in order to grow.
1. Food. You need to eat different kinds of food to make the
body parts grow healthy. The food that you eat are
grouped as go foods, grow foods, and glow foods.

Go Food Glow Food

Grow Food
Go foods give energy to your body to help you move. Grow
foods make your body parts grow bigger. Glow foods keep your
body strong so you will not get sick.
You eat three full meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and supper.
It is also important that you drink at least eight glasses of water
every day.
2. Clothing. You wear different kinds of clothing to protect
your body parts from the changing weather. Look at the
types of clothing that you wear for different types of
weather.

PROPER WAYS OF CARING FOR THE BODY

Background Information
The human body is amazing. It is always working and
growing, changing food to fuel and fighting illness and germs.
Parents take care of children’s bodies by making sure that
children have everything they need to grow and maintain good
health.

Good Health Habits and Practices

Growing children should observe good healthful habits to
keep them strong and healthy. It is not enough that your basic
needs such as food, clothing, and shelter are provided to you. You
should develop good healthful habits and practices to stay
healthy.

1. Eat a balanced diet.

Every time you take your meal, eat go foods, grow foods,
and glow foods. You can eat rice or bread with fish, eggs,
chicken, vegetables, and fruits. You can drink milk, juice and
water.

2. Eat your meals regularly.

Observe a regular time for eating and eat the right food for

every meal. If it is time for breakfast, you must eat your

breakfast. Do not skip meals. Eat clean food and chew your
food well. Wash your hands before and after eating.
3. Take a bath every day.
Rub your body parts with soap and face towel. Taking a
bath cools your body and keeps it clean. Use clean towels to
dry your body. Change with clean clothes after taking a
bath.
4. Brush your teeth after every breakfast, lunch, or supper.
Brushing your teeth removes the small bits of food left
between your teeth. Bits of food in between teeth may
cause tooth decay and bad breath. Gargle with water
every time you eat candies, chocolates, and sweet food.
Gargling washes away too much sweet from mouth.

5. Have enough rest and exercise.

Sleep at least eight to ten hours a day. Have time to walk
around and play with your friends. Walking and running are
good forms of exercise.

6. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water every day.

Water is the best liquid that can flush wastes from your body.

7. Get enough fresh air and sun light.

Stay in rooms with open windows for more fresh air. You can
play outdoors and feel the morning sun light that is good for
your body.

8. Participate in the activities of your family.

Enjoy the activities of your family. Be ready to help in doing
some work that you can do for the family. Show your love
and care to the members of your family.

HOW DO ANIMALS USE THEIR BODY PARTS?

Background Information:
Many animals have developed specific parts of the body adapted to
survival in a certain environment. Among them are webbed feet, sharp claws,
whiskers, sharp teeth, large beaks, wings, and hooves.
Fish uses slime on its scales to glide through the water.
Seed-eating birds have cone-shaped beaks to crush and grind
seeds.
The eyes and nostrils of the crocodile stick up above its
head, so it can hide under the water and keep a look out for prey.
Goats have hoofed feet, so they can climb rocks.
Gorillas use their feet to climb trees and to pick up
food.
Lizards have toes fringed with spiny scales to help them run
across the sand without sinking.
Butterflies straw like tongue also called the proboscis is
one body part of their body that help them survive. The
monarch’s wings colors tell predators they are poisonous to eat.
Zebra’s stripes are used for camouflage, long and
powerful legs for running, and strong teeth adapted to a grassy
diet are among the most important adaptations of Zebras.

Whiskers are well-honed sensory tool that helps a cat see

in the dark and steer clear of hungry predators.
Web feet is used by ducks, frogs, and geese in paddling
through water. The webs push more water than just a bird foot
Webbed
with spread-out toes would push.

Sharp claws are used to catch and hold prey. They are
used for digging, climbing trees, self-defense, and grooming. Sharp claws

Beak
Large beaks are used for eating, for killing
prey, fighting, getting objects, and feeding young.
Sharp teeth are used for cutting and chopping
food.

NEEDS OF ANIMALS IN ORDER TO LIVE

Background Information:
Animals need different things in order to live. Just like people, animals need
food, water, shelter or habitat, fresh air, and sunlight in order to grow.
1. Food and Water. Animals eat different kinds of food. Some animals like
cow and goat eat plants. Some animals like tigers and crocodiles eat
meat. Some animals like pigs and cats eat both plants and meat. Animals
need clean water to drink.

Some big and wild animals in the forest like the tiger and lion eat
other animals for food. They drink water from rivers or streams in the
forest.
Animals that live in water usually eat very small plants and small
fish that live in the water.

2. Shelter or Home. Animals need shelter or home where they can sleep,
eat, and lay their eggs or give birth to their baby animals. They also need
shelter to protect them from heavy rain and the heat of the sun. Pets at
home need a clean place in the house or a big cage or a pet’s house
where they can live. Farm animals need place where there are trees,
grass, and clean pond. Forest animals have shelter in the trees. Some
forest animals live in caves and under the ground.

3. Fresh Air and Sunlight. Animals need fresh air to breathe and sunlight to
keep them warm.

PLANTS PARTS AND STRUCTURES

Background Information:
Plants have different parts. The basic parts are the leaves, stems and
roots.
Each part of the plant has work to do. The leaves make food for the
plant. They receive sunlight and breathe air. The roots take water from the
soil. The stems hold the leaves. The stem carries water from the roots to the
leaves and to the other parts of the plant. A stem that becomes woody and
hard is the trunk. A trunk holds the smaller stems of a tree.
Some plants bear flowers and fruits. Flowers make the plant beautiful.
They develop into a fruit. Fruit contains seed that grows into a new plant.
Some plants grow from seeds while others grow from stems, roots, and leaves.
Parts of a Plant
• The roots hold the plant
in place.
• They take in water from
the soil.
• They take in food from
the soil.
• The part that grows out
of the bottom of the
stem.

Roots

• The leaf breathes in air called carbon dioxide

and breathes out oxygen.
• The leaf takes in energy from the sun and turns it
into energy for the plant. This is called
leaf photosynthesis.
• The green part that grows out of the stem
• The stem stands the plant up.
• The stem is the elevator that takes the food
and water to the rest of the plant.
• The stick like part between the flower and
the roots.

stem

• The flower attracts insects by its color

and smell so insects can pollinate the
flower.
• After being pollinated, the flower
makes the seeds.
• The top colorful part at the top of the
stem.

Needs of Plants to Live

Background Information:

Plants need many things in order to grow well and multiply. Plants need
sunlight in order for the leaves to make food for plants. Plants need mineral
and water from the soil to make the
plants grow well. Fertilizers are added to
soil to make it rich in minerals. Left-over
or spoiled food, fruits and vegetable
peelings, and animal wastes can be
made into compost. Compost is a good
source of fertilizer. Leaves need air to
make food, too. The air that man and
animals breathe out or what we call
carbon dioxide are used by plants to
make food.
