Some people think that technology makes people more isolated, while others believe it

helps people communicate better. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Since the dawn of telecommunication, the way we connect has changed significantly. While
some deem it has engendered isolation among communities, others believe that it has
provided us with a wider range of communication tools. This essay will evaluate both
viewpoints before presenting the writer’s opinion.

On one hand, it is undeniable that technology has revolutionized the way we communicate.
Long gone is the era when the only means of long-distance communication was sending
letters, often associated with lengthiness and infrequency, and geographical distances
were a considerable impediment to communication. These days, at the touch of a button,
video conferencing and instantaneous messaging are available, allowing people to connect
no matter how far away they are. As long as one is connected to the internet, they can
check up on their friends’ stories, share their thoughts via blogs and posts, and see their
loved ones from across the globe.

By contrast, though the physical hurdles of communication have been eradicated,


technology presents another form of difficulty, especially to young people. Since social
media provides people so many tools to keep in touch with others virtually, the need to
meet up with friends in-person has been rendered obsolete. Having grown up with such
tools, young people experience essentially fewer real-life interactions with their
acquaintances, which, as a result, affects their ability to hold one-on-one conversations and
interpersonal skills.

In conclusion, technology, like many other things, brings both merits and demerits. It gives
us intercontinental connection, but also poses significant threats to our relationships
outside the media. In my opinion, we should learn to use technology sensibly in order to
maximize the benefits it brings while maintaining our interpersonal skills, because there is
no doubt that these tools are here to stay.
