CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Introduction
The discovery of a world-class polymetallic mineral province in Kaduna State,
Nigeria, announced by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency in collaboration with
the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development during the AFNIS Summit 2026,
represents one of the most significant geological discoveries in West Africa in recent
decades. The province reportedly contains economically viable concentrations of
critical minerals including lithium, platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, nickel,
copper, and rare earth elements (REEs), which are indispensable for the global energy
transition, electric mobility, renewable energy infrastructure, defence technology,
aerospace, telecommunications, and advanced manufacturing.

Globally, the demand for these strategic minerals has increased dramatically due to
the rapid transition toward low-carbon technologies and decarbonization initiatives.
According to the International Energy Agency, the demand for lithium alone is
projected to increase by more than forty times by 2040 under sustainable development
scenarios, while demand for nickel, cobalt, copper, graphite, and rare earth elements
is expected to experience similar exponential growth. Consequently, countries
possessing large reserves of critical minerals are increasingly viewed as strategic
partners in the global supply chain for clean energy technologies.

Nigeria has historically relied heavily on crude oil exports, which contribute a
significant proportion of government revenue and foreign exchange earnings. Despite
possessing over forty-four commercially exploitable minerals distributed across more
than five hundred mineral occurrences, the country's mining sector contributes less
than one percent to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This relatively low
contribution has been attributed to inadequate exploration, insufficient geological
data, poor infrastructure, limited private sector investment, artisanal mining activities,
and inadequate mineral beneficiation facilities.

The Kaduna polymetallic discovery therefore represents a potential turning point in

Nigeria's mineral resource development strategy. If fully explored, evaluated, and
commercially developed, the province could significantly diversify Nigeria's
economy, attract foreign direct investment, promote industrialization, generate
employment, improve export earnings, strengthen local mineral processing industries,
and position Nigeria as a major supplier of critical minerals to international markets.

2.2 Concept of a Polymetallic Mineral

Province
A polymetallic mineral province refers to a geological region containing multiple
economically valuable metallic mineral deposits that have formed through related
geological processes over extended geological time. Such provinces commonly
contain combinations of precious metals, base metals, strategic metals, and industrial
minerals occurring within interconnected geological environments.

The formation of polymetallic provinces is generally associated with several

geological processes, including:

 Magmatic differentiation
 Hydrothermal mineralization
 Regional metamorphism
 Pegmatitic intrusion
 Structural deformation
 Tectonic plate interactions
 Magmatic-hydrothermal alteration
 Fault-controlled mineral deposition

These geological processes result in the concentration of economically valuable

metals within specific rock formations, structural zones, shear zones, fractures, faults,
and intrusive bodies.

Globally recognized polymetallic provinces include:

 Bushveld Igneous Complex (South Africa)

 Sudbury Basin (Canada)
 Norilsk-Talnakh Province (Russia)
 Bayan Obo Rare Earth Province (China)
 Pilbara Craton (Australia)

The newly identified Kaduna polymetallic province shares several geological

characteristics with these internationally recognized mineral provinces, particularly
the coexistence of lithium-bearing pegmatites, gold mineralization, base metals, and
platinum group metals.

2.3 Geological Setting of Kaduna State

Kaduna State lies within the Nigerian Basement Complex, which forms part of the
Pan-African Mobile Belt situated between the West African Craton and the Congo
Craton. The basement rocks comprise:

 Migmatite-Gneiss Complex
 Schist Belts
 Older Granites
 Pegmatites
 Quartz veins
 Mafic and ultramafic intrusions
These rock units were formed during the Pan-African Orogeny approximately 600
million years ago and have undergone multiple phases of tectonic deformation,
metamorphism, hydrothermal alteration, and intrusive magmatism.

Several studies have demonstrated that pegmatitic intrusions within the Nigerian
Basement Complex are highly prospective for lithium-bearing minerals such as:

 Spodumene
 Lepidolite
 Petalite
 Tantalite
 Columbite

Similarly, ultramafic intrusive rocks possess significant exploration potential for:

 Platinum
 Palladium
 Nickel
 Copper
 Chromium

The coexistence of these lithologies makes Kaduna State highly prospective for
polymetallic mineralization.

2.4 Critical Minerals within the Kaduna

Discovery
The discovery reportedly includes several internationally recognized critical minerals.

Lithium
Lithium is presently regarded as the world's most strategic battery mineral. It is
primarily used in:

 Electric vehicle batteries

 Grid-scale energy storage systems
 Mobile electronics

 Renewable energy technologies

The reported 3.3 million metric tonnes of lithium resources significantly enhances
Nigeria's position within the global lithium market.
Platinum Group Metals (PGMs)
Platinum Group Metals consist of:

 Platinum
 Palladium
 Rhodium
 Ruthenium
 Iridium
 Osmium

These metals are widely used in:

 Hydrogen fuel cells

 Automotive catalytic converters
 Petrochemical industries

2.6 Companies Operating within the

Kaduna Polymetallic Province
One of the major questions arising from the announcement concerns the number of
companies currently operating within the newly identified polymetallic province.

Based on official information released by the Federal Government through the NGSA
and the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, only one private company has so
far been publicly identified as directly involved in the exploration leading to the
discovery.

Company Status Role

Conducted exploration in partnership with NGSA
Steron Mining Officially
leading to the identification of the Kaduna
Company Limited Confirmed
polymetallic mineral province.

Steron Mining Company Limited reportedly conducted systematic geological

exploration in collaboration with the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency. According
to public announcements, one exploration site contains approximately 3.3 million
metric tonnes of lithium resources, while broader investigations indicate the
presence of a much larger polymetallic mineral system.

As of the date of the official announcement, no additional companies have been

formally identified by the Federal Government as operating specifically within
the newly delineated polymetallic province. Although numerous mining companies
hold exploration licences and mining leases across Kaduna State, their involvement in
this particular discovery has not been officially confirmed. Therefore, the number of
publicly confirmed companies operating directly within the discovery area is
currently one (1): Steron Mining Company Limited.
It is anticipated that, following further resource delineation, feasibility studies, and
licensing rounds, additional domestic and international exploration companies, mining
firms, engineering contractors, geotechnical consultants, drilling companies,
environmental specialists, and mineral processing companies will participate in the
development of the province.

2.7 Economic Significance of the

Discovery
The Kaduna polymetallic discovery has significant implications for Nigeria's
economic diversification. The development of these critical mineral resources could:

 Increase mining's contribution to GDP.

 Reduce dependence on crude oil exports.
 Attract substantial foreign direct investment (FDI).
 Generate skilled and unskilled employment.
 Promote local mineral beneficiation and value addition.
 Increase government revenue through royalties and taxes.
 Enhance infrastructure development in mining regions.
 Position Nigeria as a strategic supplier of critical minerals for the global
energy transition.

However, realizing these benefits will require sustained investment in geological

exploration, transparent licensing, environmental stewardship, modern mining
technologies, community engagement, and adherence to international reporting
standards.
