CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND

RECOMMENDATIONS
5.1 Summary
This study reviewed the recent announcement of the discovery of a world-class
polymetallic mineral province in Kaduna State, Nigeria, as presented by the
Nigerian Geological Survey Agency and the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals
Development during the AFNIS Summit 2026. The study examined the geological
characteristics of the discovery, the strategic importance of the identified critical
minerals, the companies officially associated with the exploration programme, and the
potential implications for Nigeria's mining sector and economic diversification.

The literature review established that polymetallic mineral provinces are geologically
complex systems formed through multiple episodes of magmatic intrusion, tectonic
activity, hydrothermal alteration, and structural deformation. Such provinces
commonly host economically significant concentrations of precious metals, base
metals, and strategic minerals within a single geological environment. The Kaduna
discovery reportedly comprises lithium, platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, nickel,
copper, and rare earth elements (REEs), all of which are classified as critical minerals
due to their indispensable role in electric vehicle manufacturing, renewable energy
systems, advanced electronics, aerospace engineering, defence technologies, and
modern industrial production.

The geological assessment indicates that the mineralization is hosted within the
Nigerian Basement Complex, an ancient Precambrian terrane that has undergone
extensive Pan-African tectonic evolution. The occurrence of lithium-bearing
pegmatites together with base-metal sulphides, precious metals, and rare earth-bearing
lithologies suggests a highly prospective mineral system with significant exploration
potential. The discovery of an estimated 3.3 million metric tonnes of lithium
resources at a single exploration site further highlights the strategic importance of the
province and suggests the possibility of a much larger mineralized system requiring
additional exploration and resource delineation.

The methodology adopted in the study involved a comprehensive review of official

government publications, geological literature, regulatory information, and publicly
available technical reports. Information was obtained from the Nigerian Geological
Survey Agency, the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, the Mining
Cadastre Office, international geological organizations, peer-reviewed publications,
and company disclosures. Data were validated through cross-referencing multiple
authoritative sources to ensure technical reliability and consistency.

The results demonstrate that the Kaduna polymetallic province has the potential to
become one of Nigeria's most strategically important mining developments. The
province contains a diverse assemblage of critical minerals that are essential for the
global transition toward low-carbon technologies. Their coexistence within a single
geological province substantially increases the economic attractiveness of the deposit
by supporting diversified mineral production and reducing dependence on a single
commodity.

A major objective of the study was to determine the number of companies operating
within the newly announced polymetallic province. Based on currently available
official information, only one private company—Steron Mining Company
Limited—has been publicly identified as directly involved in the exploration
programme that led to the discovery. Although several mining companies operate
elsewhere in Kaduna State under separate exploration licences and mining leases, no
additional companies have been officially confirmed as operating specifically
within the newly identified polymetallic province. This finding reflects the current
stage of exploration and may change as additional licences, partnerships, and
development projects are announced by the relevant government agencies.

The study further highlights the significant economic opportunities associated with
the discovery. Successful development of the province could diversify Nigeria's
economy, increase mining's contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), attract
substantial foreign direct investment, strengthen local mineral processing industries,
create employment opportunities, improve government revenue, and position Nigeria
as a competitive supplier of critical minerals within global supply chains for electric
vehicles, renewable energy technologies, and advanced manufacturing.

5.2 Conclusion
The discovery of the Kaduna polymetallic mineral province represents a landmark
achievement in Nigeria's mineral exploration history and has the potential to
transform the country's solid minerals sector. The occurrence of lithium, platinum
group metals, gold, nickel, copper, and rare earth elements within a single geological
province significantly enhances the strategic importance of the discovery, particularly
in the context of increasing global demand for critical minerals required for the
energy transition and technological innovation.

The geological evidence presently available suggests that the province possesses
favourable characteristics for large-scale mineral development. However, the reported
lithium resource of approximately 3.3 million metric tonnes should be regarded as a
preliminary exploration estimate until it is confirmed through comprehensive
drilling programmes, geostatistical resource modelling, and independent reporting in
accordance with internationally accepted standards such as the JORC Code, NI 43-
101, or the CRIRSCO International Reporting Template. Additional geological
investigations, including detailed mapping, geophysical surveys, geochemical
sampling, metallurgical testing, and feasibility studies, will be required before the
commercial viability of the deposits can be fully established.
The study concludes that Steron Mining Company Limited is currently the only
company publicly confirmed by the Federal Government as directly involved in
the exploration activities that resulted in the discovery of the Kaduna
polymetallic mineral province. This finding should not be interpreted as indicating
that only one mining company operates within Kaduna State generally; rather, it
reflects the present state of official disclosures concerning this specific mineral
province. As exploration progresses and the government issues additional exploration
licences, mining leases, or joint venture agreements, the number of participating
companies is expected to increase.

Overall, the Kaduna discovery provides a unique opportunity for Nigeria to accelerate
economic diversification, reduce dependence on petroleum revenues, strengthen
domestic mineral value chains, and establish itself as a significant participant in the
global critical minerals market. Realizing these opportunities will require transparent
governance, sustained investment in exploration, adherence to international reporting
standards, environmental stewardship, and effective collaboration between
government institutions, private investors, research organizations, and host
communities.

5.3 Recommendations
Based on the findings of this study, the following technical and policy
recommendations are proposed:

1. Comprehensive Geological Exploration

The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, in collaboration with exploration

companies, should undertake detailed geological investigations involving high-
resolution geological mapping, airborne and ground geophysical surveys,
geochemical sampling, diamond core drilling, and three-dimensional geological
modelling to accurately delineate the extent, geometry, and continuity of the
mineralized zones.

2. Independent Resource Estimation

All reported mineral resources should be independently verified and reported in

accordance with internationally recognized mineral reporting standards, including the
JORC Code, NI 43-101, or the CRIRSCO International Reporting Template, to
improve transparency, investor confidence, and international credibility.

3. Expansion of Exploration Activities

Systematic exploration should be extended beyond the currently identified sites to

determine whether the mineralized system extends into adjacent geological
formations. Regional exploration programmes should integrate remote sensing,
structural geology, and geophysical interpretation to identify additional exploration
targets.
4. Transparent Licensing and Regulatory Oversight

The Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the Mining Cadastre Office
should maintain a transparent and regularly updated public register of exploration
licences, mining leases, and companies operating within the Kaduna polymetallic
province. Such transparency will strengthen investor confidence, facilitate regulatory
compliance, and improve public access to reliable information.

5. Development of Local Mineral Beneficiation

Government policies should prioritize the establishment of domestic mineral

processing and beneficiation facilities for lithium, rare earth elements, platinum group
metals, nickel, and copper. Local value addition will maximize economic benefits,
create skilled employment opportunities, reduce dependence on raw mineral exports,
and support industrial development.

6. Environmental and Social Impact Assessment

Comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) should be

conducted before large-scale mining commences. These assessments should address
biodiversity conservation, water resources, land degradation, mine waste
management, greenhouse gas emissions, occupational health and safety, and the
socio-economic well-being of host communities.

7. Strengthening Research and Academic Collaboration

Partnerships should be established between government agencies, universities,

geological research institutes, and private mining companies to promote advanced
research in mineral exploration, resource evaluation, metallurgical processing, mine
engineering, environmental management, and critical mineral technologies.

8. Capacity Building and Human Resource Development

Continuous training programmes should be developed for Nigerian geologists, mining

engineers, geophysicists, geochemists, surveyors, GIS specialists, and environmental
scientists to enhance national expertise in modern exploration techniques, digital mine
planning, geostatistical resource estimation, and sustainable mining practices.

9. Infrastructure Development

Strategic investments should be made in transportation networks, electrical power

supply, water resources, telecommunications, and logistics infrastructure to support
future mining operations and improve the economic viability of mineral development
within the Kaduna province.

10. Periodic Public Disclosure of Exploration Progress

The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency and the Ministry of Solid Minerals
Development should periodically publish updated technical reports detailing
exploration progress, drilling results, resource estimates, participating companies, and
project development milestones. Regular disclosure will improve transparency,
facilitate scientific research, and support informed investment decisions.

11. Future Monitoring of Company Participation

As exploration progresses, future studies should monitor changes in company

participation within the Kaduna polymetallic province. At the time of this study,
Steron Mining Company Limited is the only publicly confirmed company
directly associated with the discovery, but additional operators are likely to emerge
as exploration licences are granted, feasibility studies advance, and commercial
mining projects are initiated.

Overall Conclusion
The Kaduna polymetallic mineral province represents one of the most promising
critical mineral discoveries in Nigeria's recent history. Its reported assemblage of
lithium, platinum group metals, gold, nickel, copper, and rare earth elements provides
a strong foundation for long-term mineral development and could significantly
enhance Nigeria's position in the global market for critical minerals. However, the
ultimate success of the project will depend on rigorous geological investigation,
transparent governance, sustainable environmental management, investment in
downstream processing, and continued collaboration among government agencies,
industry, academia, and local communities. With these measures in place, the
discovery has the potential to become a catalyst for industrial growth, economic
diversification, technological advancement, and sustainable national development.
