STAGE 1: Problem Identification and Scoping
1.1 Problem Description
At Dimbe Primary School, our playground and classrooms are often dirty
because learners throw rubbish on the ground. Wrappers, plastic bottles, and
paper are everywhere. Some learners do not know where to put their
rubbish. Others are too lazy to walk to the dustbin. Litter makes our school
look ugly, attracts flies, and can make us sick. Nobody has taught us why
littering is bad and how to keep our school clean. If we do not learn to stop
littering now, our school will always be dirty and unhealthy.
1.2 Statement of Intent
This project aims to help Grade 6 learners stop littering at Dimbe Primary
School. The objectives are:
To find out why learners litter the most
To teach learners where to put rubbish properly
To create a classroom reminder about keeping our school clean
1.3 Project Specifications
Must be led by Grade 6 learners
Use simple words that all learners understand
Low cost (paper, crayons, cardboard, dustbins)
Give practical steps, not just theory
STAGE 2: Investigation of Ideas
Idea 1: Litter Observation Walk
We walk around the school and count how many pieces of rubbish we see in
different places.
Good: Shows us which areas are dirtiest. Easy to do.
Bad: Does not solve anything by itself. We might miss some
areas.
Idea 2: Clean-up Campaign
We spend one day picking up all the rubbish around the school.
Good: School becomes clean immediately. Learners feel proud.
Bad: Rubbish comes back the next day. Does not teach learners
to stop littering.
Idea 3: "Clean School" Poster
Create a large poster with rules about putting rubbish in dustbins.
Good: Visual reminder every day. Easy to make.
Bad: Poster alone is not enough. Learners need reminders and
practice.
STAGE 3: Chosen Solution
The "Clean and Green" Poster and Dustbin Plan
I chose this solution because it combines a visual reminder with practical
action.
The Three Simple Rules:

STAGE 4: Development and Refinement
How We Created the Poster:
Step 1: Walked around the school and counted rubbish in
different areas. The playground had the most litter (45 pieces),
followed by the classroom (30 pieces).
Step 2: Drew a large poster on cardboard using crayons. Used
three colors: RED (Stop), YELLOW (Think), GREEN (Drop).
Step 3: Added simple drawings: a hand saying STOP, a child
thinking, a learner putting rubbish in a dustbin.
Step 4: Hung the poster at the front of the classroom where
everyone can see it.
Step 5: Our Social Science teacher checked the poster to make
sure the steps were correct.
Improvements:
Added a second poster for the playground where most litter was
found
Placed two extra dustbins in the playground
Made the letters large and bold so learners can read from far
away
STAGE 5: Implementation
The "Clean and Green" Poster and Dustbin Plan was implemented in our
Grade 6 class and playground at Dimbe Primary School.
Launch: Our teacher introduced the poster on a Monday
morning. The whole class repeated the three steps aloud
together.
Daily reminder: Every morning for two weeks, our teacher
pointed to the poster and said, "Before you drop rubbish,
remember Stop, Think, Drop."
Real use: Learners started using the dustbins more often. One
learner said, "I was about to throw my wrapper on the ground,
but I remembered the poster and put it in the bin."
What learners said:
"The poster helps me remember not to litter."
"Our playground looks cleaner now."
"I tell my friends to use the dustbin too."
STAGE 6: Evaluation and Future
Recommendations
6.1 Success of the Project
The project was successful. Before the poster and extra dustbins, our
playground had 45 pieces of rubbish. After two weeks, we counted only 15
pieces. Learners started putting rubbish in dustbins instead of throwing it on
the ground. Our teacher said our school looks cleaner and healthier.
6.2 Challenges Faced
Some learners still dropped rubbish when they thought nobody
was watching. We solved this by choosing monitors to remind
them.
A few learners said the dustbins were too far. We solved this by
placing more dustbins in the playground.
6.3 Recommendations
Keep the posters up for the rest of the year and for next year's
Grade 6
Make more posters for other areas like the hall and toilets
Choose two learners each week to be "Clean Monitors" who
remind others to use dustbins
Our class can visit Grade 5 and Grade 4 to teach them the Stop,
Think, Drop method
