1. Overview of the Six Insurers
1.1 Care Health Insurance (formerly Religare Health Insurance)
Founded in 2012, Care Health Insurance is India's second-largest standalone health insurer, backed by Kedaara
Capital and Union Bank of India. As a dedicated health-only insurer, its flagship plan, Care Supreme, combines
strong base-plan benefits with a claim settlement ratio of approximately 93%.
1.2 Aditya Birla Health Insurance
A joint venture between the Aditya Birla Group and MMI Holdings of South Africa, incorporated in 2015. Aditya
Birla Health is known for its wellness-gamification ecosystem, Health Returns™, which gives back up to 100% of
premium for healthy habits (step counts, calorie burn), and its Activ One series of plans offering very high
reload/restoration benefits (up to 500–800% in some variants) and Day-1 cover for several chronic conditions.
1.3 Manipal Cigna Health Insurance
A joint venture between the Manipal Group and US-based Cigna, formerly known as Cigna TTK. Manipal Cigna's
ProHealth series (Select, Prime, Prime Advantage) is built around extensive modularity – letting clients choose
deductibles, co-pay levels, room rent removal, and add-on packages (Re-Assurance, Worldwide Emergency
Cover, Health Maintenance Benefit) individually, which suits price-sensitive, detail-oriented buyers but also
means several valuable benefits are not automatically included.
1.4 Tata AIG General Insurance
A joint venture between the Tata Group and American International Group (AIG). Tata AIG's MediCare and
MediCare Premier plans are positioned at the premium end, with global coverage for planned treatment (if first
diagnosed in India), no room rent capping, and consumables cover built in – but reviewers note the plans are
comparatively expensive, and restoration of sum insured beyond the first instance requires a paid add-on.
1.5 Cholamandalam MS General Insurance (Chola MS)
A joint venture between the Murugappa Group and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group of Japan, headquartered
in Chennai and operational since 2001. Its Chola Healthline plan (Value/Freedom/Enrich/Privilege variants) is a
value-for-money, regionally strong option, particularly in South India, but comes with room rent restrictions tied
to sum insured and a notable 20% co-payment if treatment is taken in a higher-tier city than the one the
premium was paid for.
1.6 Royal Sundaram General Insurance
One of India's oldest private general insurers (a joint venture heritage with Sundaram Finance and previously
RSA), Royal Sundaram offers the Lifeline plan in Classic/Supreme/Elite variants, along with a distinctive
Multiplier plan designed around very large one-time claims (up to 11X sum insured). It is a smaller-network
insurer relative to the top-tier players, suiting clients who prioritise specific regional hospital access or the
Multiplier concept.

Acknowledged by reviewers as a “slightly expensive” plan;
Tata AIG – MediCare

Lower headline premium, but room rent restrictions by
Cholamandalam MS –

Entry variants (Classic) are affordable but with more

Overall takeaway:
Care Health's Care Supreme remains one of the most cost-effective options even against this alternate
competitor set, because its key value-adding features (no room rent cap, no co-pay, unlimited restoration) are
part of the base plan rather than dependent on lifestyle targets (Aditya Birla), modular add-on selection
(Manipal Cigna), or higher premium tiers (Tata AIG, Royal Sundaram).
4 Advantages of Care Health Insurance Over These Competitor
Page 5
• No Lifestyle-Dependent Discounts Required for Core Value: unlike Aditya Birla's
HealthReturns™, which requires consistently meeting step-count or calorie-burn
targets to access the full discount, Care's cost-effectiveness does not depend on
the client maintaining a tracked fitness regimen.
• Simpler, Built-In Structure vs. Manipal Cigna's Modular Add-Ons: Care
Supreme's no-cap room rent and no co-pay are standard; Manipal Cigna's
ProHealth Prime requires opting into specific packages (Removal of Room Rent
Limit, Re-Assurance) to match this, which adds complexity and cost.
• More Cost-Effective than Tata AIG for Similar Core Benefits: Care's Care Supreme
is positioned more affordably than Tata AIG's MediCare Premier, which reviewers
explicitly flag as a comparatively expensive plan, while still matching it on no
room-rent-cap and organ donor cover.
• No Zone-Based Co-Pay Penalty unlike Cholamandalam MS: Cholamandalam MS
applies room rent restrictions by sum insured and a 20% co-pay for cross-zone
treatment; Care Supreme has no such zone-based penalty.
• Strong, Verifiable Claim Settlement Track Record: Care's claim settlement ratio
(~93%) compares favourably with Cholamandalam MS (~82.6%) and is broadly
competitive with the other insurers in this set.
• Wider Hospital Network than Several Regional/Niche Insurers: 11,400+ hospitals
gives Care a materially larger reach than Cholamandalam MS (~4,300–6,500+) and
Manipal Cigna (~6,500+), reducing the chance a client's preferred hospital falls
outside the network.
• Stronger Standard Bonus Growth than Cholamandalam MS: up to 500%
cumulative bonus on Care Supreme is markedly higher than Cholamandalam MS's
max 100% (Restore Infinity variant) or the standard 25% on its classic Healthline
plan.
