Probability Individual Assignment

The document outlines an individual assignment for a Probability and Statistics course at the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology, requiring students to answer two questions from a list of eight statistical problems. Each question involves hypothesis testing at specified significance levels, including tests for proportions, means, and variances. The assignment is due on July 23, 2025, and emphasizes the importance of calculating and interpreting P values.

GSU 07404: PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS

INDIVIDUAL ASIGNMENT (10 MARKS)

To be submitted on Monday 23rd July 2025

Choose only two questions:

1. In an experiment of extrasensory perception (ESP) a subject in one room is asked to state

the color (red or blue) of a card chosen from a deck of 50 well shuffled cards by an
individual in another room. It is unknown to the subject how many red or blue cards are
in the deck. If the subject identifies 32 cards correctly, determine whether the results are
significant at 0.01 level of significance. Find and interpret P value of the test.
2. The manufacturer of a patent medicine claimed that it was 90% effective in relieving an
allergy for a period of 8 hours. In a sample of 200 people who had the allergy, the medicine
provided relief for 160 people.
i) Determine whether the manufacturer’s claim is legitimate by using 0.01 level of
significance.
ii) Find the P value of the test
3. The breaking length of the cables produced by a manufacturer have mean 1800m and
standard deviation 100m. by new technique in the manufacturing process it is claimed
that the breaking length can be increased. To test this claim, a sample of 50 cables is
tested, and it is found that the mean breaking strength is 18.5. can we support the claim
at 0.05level of significance?
4. The mean height of 50 students who shows above average participation in college
athletics was 68.2inches with standard deviation of 2.5inches, while 50 students who
showed no interest in such participation had mean height of 67.5 inches with standard
deviation of 2.8inches. test the hypothesis that the students who participate in college
athletics are toller than other students.
5. Two groups, A and B, each consists of 100 people who have a disease. A serum is given to
group A and not group B, otherwise the two groups are treated identically. If found that
in group A and B, 75 and 65 people, respectively recover from the disease. Test the
hypothesis that the serum helps to cure the disease using the significance level of 0.05.
6. The Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of 16 students from one area of the city shows a mean of
107 with standard deviation of 10, while the IQs of 14 students from another area of the
city showed a mean of 112 with standard deviation of 8. Is there a significant difference
between the IQs of the two groups at a 0.01 level of significance. What ids the P value of
the test.
7. In the past the standard deviation of weights of certain 40gm packages filled by machine
was 0.25gm. A random sample of 20 packages showed a standard deviation of 0.32gm. Is
there apparent increase in variability significantly at 0.05 level of significance?
8. An instructor has two classes, A and B, in a particular subject. Class A has 16 students
while class B has 25 students. On the same examination, although there was no significant
difference in mean grades class A and B had a standard deviation of 9 and 12 respectively.
Can we conclude that at 0.01 level of significance that the variability of class B is greater
than that of A? what is the P value of the test?

In addition:(IMPORTANT)Make revisions on Test of goodness of fit and test for independence
