English Punctuation Rules

1. Full Stop (.)


Used at the end of a declarative sentence.
Examples:
I go to college every day.
She has completed her assignment.
2. Comma (,)
Used to separate words, phrases, or clauses.
a) In a list
I bought apples, oranges, bananas, and grapes.
b) After introductory words or phrases
After finishing the work, he went home.
c) Before coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, so, yet, for, nor) joining two independent
clauses
I wanted to go, but it was raining.
3. Semicolon (;)
Used to connect closely related independent clauses.
Examples:
The exam was difficult; everyone worked hard.
She loves reading; her brother prefers sports.
4. Colon (:)
Used before a list, explanation, or quotation.
Examples:
Bring the following items: a pen, a pencil, and a notebook.
He had one goal: to succeed.
5. Question Mark (?)
Used at the end of a direct question.
Examples:
Where do you live?
Have you finished your homework?
6. Exclamation Mark (!)
Used to express strong feelings or surprise.
Examples:
What a beautiful day!
Hurrah! We have won the match!
7. Apostrophe (')
a) Showing possession

Note:
Its = possessive pronoun (The dog wagged its tail.)

8. Quotation Marks (" ")
Used to show direct speech or quotations.
Examples:

9. Hyphen (-)
Used to join words.
Examples:
A well-known writer
A twenty-one-year-old student
10. Parentheses ( )
Used to add extra information.
Examples:
Dhaka (the capital of Bangladesh) is a crowded city.
The meeting (which lasted two hours) was successful.
