MATHEMATICS PROJECT: RATIONAL

NUMBERS
Title Page
Project on Rational Numbers
Name: _______
Class: _______
Roll No: _______
Cover Page
Rational numbers are numbers that can be written in the form p/q, where p and q are
integers and q is not equal to zero. They are used in daily life for measurements, money,
time, and calculations.

Introduction
A rational number is any number that can be expressed as a fraction p/q where p and q are
integers and q ≠ 0. Examples include 1/2, -3/4, 5, and 0. Rational numbers form an
important part of mathematics and are used in everyday calculations.
History
The use of fractions dates back thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians used fractions for
trade and measurement. Babylonian mathematicians also used fractional values. Greek
mathematicians later studied numbers in greater detail, helping develop the modern
concept of rational numbers.
Terminology and Symbols
Numerator: Top part of a fraction.
Denominator: Bottom part of a fraction.
Integer: Whole numbers and their negatives.
Fraction: A number written as p/q.
Symbol used: p/q, where q ≠ 0.
Explanation of Rational Numbers
Rational numbers can be positive, negative, or zero. They can be represented on a number
line and can be added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided (except by zero). Examples: 3/5, -
7/8, 4, 0.
Properties of Rational Numbers
1. Closure Property
2. Commutative Property
3. Associative Property
4. Distributive Property
5. Identity Property
6. Inverse Property
These properties make calculations easier.
Representation on Number Line
Every rational number can be represented on a number line. Positive numbers lie to the
right of zero, while negative numbers lie to the left of zero.
Game / Puzzle
Arrange the following in ascending order:
3/4, -1/2, 2/3, -3/5, 1/4.
Answer: -3/5, -1/2, 1/4, 2/3, 3/4
Five Mathematical Problems with Solutions
1. 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6

2. 3/4 - 1/2 = 1/4

3. 2/3 × 3/5 = 2/5

4. 4/5 ÷ 2/3 = 6/5

5. Compare 7/8 and 3/4

LCM = 8
7/8 = 7/8 and 3/4 = 6/8
Therefore 7/8 > 3/4
Real-Life Applications
1. Cooking recipes
2. Sharing food equally
3. Measuring length and weight
4. Money and banking calculations
5. Construction and engineering
6. Science experiments
(Add related pictures for better presentation.)
Interesting Facts
1. Every integer is a rational number.
2. Rational numbers can have terminating or repeating decimals.
3. Zero is also a rational number because 0 = 0/1.
Conclusion
Rational numbers are useful in mathematics and everyday life. They help us represent parts
of a whole and perform accurate calculations.
