Definition of Terms Problem Solving on Salaries, Wages and Income
Problem Solving
Definition of Terms:
Common Pay Periods:
1. Salary - a fixed amount of money earned per year.
2. Wages - income earned based on the number of Weekly : 52 weeks
hours worked. Biweekly : 26 weeks
3. Overtime Pay - earned for hours work beyond the Monthly : 12 months
regular working time. Semi-monthly : 24 months
4. Gross Pay - total earnings before deductions. Unit : 4 quarters
5. Net Income - income after all deductions have been Semi-Annually : 2 semi annuals
subtracted.
6. Commission - pay based on the percentage of sales.
7. Piece-rate Wage Plan - pay based on the number of
items produced.
8. Standard Personal Income Deductions - amounts
taken out of gross income such as tax, SSS, and
PhilHealth.
9. Compensation - refers to salary, wages, pay, or
benefits provided to an employee in return for work
performed as required.
(Reminder: Always use the full term just in case)
Calculation of Gross Pay:
a. Piece-Rate Wage Plan
Straight-Piece Rate - Workers are paid the same fixed rate for all the items finished.
Formula: Gross Pay = Quantity x Rate (In simpler terms: GP = QR)
Graduated-Piece Rate - Workers are paid graduated rates as the quantity of items
produced increases.
Formula: GP = Q1 R1 + Q2 R2 + ... + Qn Rn
Q1 , Q2 , Q3 , ... , Qn represents the quantities produced by interval
R1 , R2 , R3 , ... , Rn represents the corresponding rates of the graduated intervals.
b. Hourly Rate - workers are paid based on the number of working hours.
Formula: Gross Pay = No. Hours Worked x Hourly Rate (In simpler terms: GP = HR)
Reminders when solving:
a. Decimal Ruling
Only use 2 decimals places (Ex. 2.43)
If the decimal exceeds more than 2 (Ex. 2.59384), round the third decimal to the closest
hundreths, (Ex. 2.593 →2.59)
b. Percentage System
200% = 2.0
150% = 1.5
100% = 1.0
75% = 0.75
50% = 0.5
10% = 0.1
5% = 0.05
1% = 0.01
c. Answering Problems
Step 1: Analyze the Given
Step 2: Find the Formula
Step 3: Solution
Example:
A carpenter earns P5.25 for every cabinet knob he installs. In one week, he finished:
Monday, 80; Tuesday, 85; Wednesday, 100; Thursday, 95; and Friday, 110. How much is his
gross pay for the week?
Find the given:
Given: R = P5.25, Q1 = 80, Q2 = 85, Q3 = 100, Q4 = 95, Q5 = 110
Find the formula to be used:
Formula: GP = Q1 R + Q2 R + ... + Qn R
Substitute the given to the formula:
Solution:
GP = Q1 R + Q2 R + Q3 R + Q4 R + Q5 R
GP = 80(5.25) + 85(5.25) + 100(5.25) + 95(5.25) + 110(5.25)
GP = 420 + 446.25 + 525 + 498.75 + 577.5
GP = P2467.5
(Note: The formula used is not graduated piece rate nor is included in the book, but a formula
for multiple Straight-Piece Rates. This is just a visual reminder para hindi gulo-gulo ung
solution and para hindi maubusan ng oras.)
