INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PATNA
CE1201/CE1101 (Summer 2025): Engineering Graphics
Tutorial 3 (27th January 2026)
Maximum Marks: 50
Instructions for Students
✓ Read all questions carefully before attempting them.
✓ Drawings must be made on one side of the sheet only.
✓ Students must bring their own drawing instruments and drawing book.
✓ Marks allotted for each question are indicated in parentheses.
✓ All dimensions are in millimetres (mm), unless stated otherwise.
✓ The solution to each question must be clearly separated using thick continuous lines.
✓ All sheets must have border lines as per specification; the first sheet should include a complete title
box, while subsequent sheets should contain only the name, roll number, and group.
✓ Use the correct type of pencil judiciously.
Questions
1. Draw an ellipse using the definition of the directrix and the focus, given that the focus is 55 mm
from the directrix. Take the eccentricity ratio for the ellipse = 2/3. For generating the points, space
lines 5 mm apart. (10)
2. Draw a parabola using the definition of the directrix and the focus, given that the focus is 60mm
from the directrix. For generating the points, space lines 5 mm apart. (10)
3. Draw a hyperbola using the definition of the directrix and the focus, given that the focus is 50 mm
from the directrix. Take eccentricity ratio for the ellipse = 3/2. For generating the points, space lines
5 mm apart. (10)
4. Draw an involute of a hexagon of side 30 mm. (10)
5. A circle of 60 mm diameter rolls along a straight line without slipping. Draw the curve traced out by
point P on the circumference, for one complete revolution of circle. Name the curve. Draw the
tangent to the curve at a point on it 50 mm from the line. (10)
General Criteria for Grading
✓ Understanding of problem and approach (30%) - If initial approach itself is wrong then all
remaining points will scaled down by half
✓ Dimensions must be put clearly (10%)
✓ Do not use multiple unit systems (like mm, cm, etc.) – use only mm
✓ Dimension lines should be drawn using 2H lead
✓ Feature lines should be drawn using 2B lead
✓ Construction lines should be properly drawn using 2H pencil – use continuous lines and not
broken (20%)
✓ Labeling of points – consistency and clarity of letter sizes (10%)
✓ Margin and title block (10%)
✓ Page management and aesthetics (10%)
✓ Geometric correctness and skillfulness – quality of drawing (10%)
