Characters:

Ariane : 32 years old, gentle, anxious, a mother.

Janice: Maria's husband, 35 years old, rough, prone to anger.

Setting: A small, modest house in a densely populated urban community in

the Philippines, and a social welfare office.

(SCENE 1: NIGHT – MARIA AND CARLO'S HOUSE)

INT. SMALL LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

SOUND of distant city noise, crickets

(The room is dimly lit. MARIA is tidying up a small table. Crislyn is curled up
on a thin mattress on the floor, pretending to sleep, but his eyes are open.

The door bursts open. CARLO stumbles in, smelling of alcohol. He's clearly
drunk.)

Janice> Arian! Is dinner ready? What is this mess?

(Maria jumps, startled.)

Ariane> It's... it's ready, Janice. I just finished.

(Janice glares at her. He knocks over a small stool with his foot.)

Janice > Messy woman! Can't you do anything right?

(He raises his hand. Ariane flinches and covers her face. Joshua stifles a
whimper.

SOUND of a loud crash (maybe a pot falling in the kitchen)

Janice> And you! Why are you still awake? Go to sleep!

(Cryslyn quickly closes his eyes tightly. Carlo walks over to the mattress. )

Janice > Don't pretend with me! You heard that, didn't you? Always listening!
(He kicks the mattress lightly. Joshua shivers. Ariane steps forward, her voice
trembling.)

Ariane> janice, please. He's just a child.

(Carlo turns his anger to Maria. He shoves her. Maria stumbles but catches
herself.)

Janice > Stay out of it! This is about respect!

(Maria looks at the floor, defeated. Carlo grumbles and walks into the
kitchen. Joshua opens his eyes, looking terrified. Maria glances at him, her
heart breaking.)

FADE OUT.

(SCENE 2: DAY – NEIGHBOR'S HOUSE / STREET)

EXT. NARROW STREET - DAY

SOUND of children playing, street vendors, everyday city noise

(ALING NENA is hanging laundry outside her house. She looks tired but
observant. She sees Maria walking by, her head down. Maria has a small
bruise on her arm, partly covered by her sleeve.)

Coleen > Maria? Good morning.

(Maria looks up, startled. She tries to hide her arm.)

Ariane> Aling Nena. Good morning.

Coleen> Are you alright? You look... tired.

Ariane > (Forcing a smile) > I'm fine, Aling Nena. Just... a lot of work.

(Aling Nena eyes Maria's arm. She sighs softly.)

Coleeen > Ariane, I hear things at night. The shouting... the crying. Joshua
too.

(Maria's eyes dart around nervously. )

MARIA > It's nothing, Aling Nena. Just... family problems.

Coleen > Family problems can become big problems, Maria. For you, for
Joshua. The Barangay officials... they are concerned. They asked me to check
on you.

(Maria looks down, tears welling up. )

Ariane> I... I don't know what to do. I'm afraid.

Coleen > You don't have to be afraid alone, Maria. There is help. The social
welfare office. They can help you. Please, think about Joshua.

(Joshua walks past them on his way home from school, his backpack looking
too heavy for him. He doesn't make eye contact with anyone. He seems to
shrink into himself.

Aling Nena watches him, then looks back at Maria, a determined look on her
face.)

FADE OUT.

Barangay Captain………. Referral

(SCENE 3: DAY – SOCIAL WELFARE OFFICE)

INT. SOCIAL WELFARE OFFICE - DAY

SOUND of quiet office sounds, distant chatter

(Maria sits nervously across from MS. CRUZ, a kind-faced social worker. Maria
is still hesitant, fiddling with her hands. Joshua sits quietly beside her,
clutching a worn toy.)

Bridget> Thank you for coming in, Maria. My name is Ms. Cruz. You can talk
to me openly. Everything you say here is private.

(Maria looks at Joshua, then back at Ms. Cruz.)

Ariane > (Softly) > My neighbor, Aling Nena... she told me to come.

MS. CRUZ > Yes, the Barangay informed us of some concerns. We want to
help.

Ariane > (Hesitantly) > Carlo... my husband... he gets angry. Especially

when he drinks. He hits me. (She pulls up her sleeve slightly, revealing a
fading bruise. Ms. Cruz nods empathetically.) MS. CRUZ > I see. And Joshua?
(Maria’s voice cracks.)

Ariane> Recently... he started hitting Joshua too. With a belt. For small
things. Joshua... he's scared to go home now. He doesn't want to see his
father.

(Joshua visibly tenses up at the mention of his father.)

MS. CRUZ > Maria, this is not okay. You and Joshua deserve to be safe. We
can help you. We have places where you can stay, away from harm. We can
help you find work, so you are not dependent on him. We can also provide
counseling for Joshua.

Ariane > But... what about Carlo? What will people say? And... I have no
money. I'm afraid.

MS. CRUZ > Your safety and Joshua's safety are the most important things,
Maria. We will help you with money, with a place to stay, with legal advice if
you want it. And what people say doesn't matter as much as your family's
well-being. We can also help Carlo get help for his anger and drinking, if he is
willing.

(Maria looks at Joshua, who is now looking at her with wide, hopeful eyes.
She takes a deep breath.)

Ariane > I... I want the violence to stop. For Joshua.

(Ms. Cruz smiles warmly.)

MS. CRUZ > That's a brave step, Maria. We are here to support you every
step of the way. You are not alone.

FADE OUT.

(SCENE 4: MONTAGE – A NEW BEGINNING)

MONTAGE - VARIOUS LOCATIONS - DAY

Upbeat, hopeful music starts playing softly.

- IMAGE 1: Maria and Joshua walking hand-in-hand, carrying small bags,

entering a clean, modest shelter. They look apprehensive but also a little
hopeful.

- IMAGE 2: Maria talking to Ms. Cruz, smiling slightly as she fills out a form.

- IMAGE 3: Joshua drawing with other children in a bright, child-friendly room.

He is starting to look less fearful.

- IMAGE 4: Maria attending a small group session with other women, sharing
a small laugh. She looks more relaxed.

- IMAGE 5: Maria doing laundry for a customer, but this time she looks
confident, and the customer is paying her fairly.

- IMAGE 6: Joshua running and playing freely in a small park, his laughter
heard softly.

- IMAGE 7: Maria and Joshua sharing a simple but warm meal, smiling at each

Maria is sitting with Joshua. She is braiding his hair. He leans into her,
comfortable and safe.

JOSHUA > Mama?

MARIA > Yes, anak?

JOSHUA > I like it here.

Maria hugs him tightly. A tear rolls down her cheek, but this time, it's a tear
of relief and hope.

MARIA > Me too, anak.

She looks out the window, at the bright sky. She still has challenges ahead,
but she has found a path to safety and a new beginning.
