About the College
Stella Maris College, a Catholic minority institution of higher
education for women in Chennai, is an autonomous institution
affiliated to the University of Madras. Founded on 15 August 1947,
the College has travelled with independent India in equipping
young women with the skills to make a positive impact in their
immediate and extended communities. It is committed to serving
the economically and socially marginalised sections of society.
Administered by the Order of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary
(FMM) and guided by the charism of their foundress, Blessed
Mary of the Passion, the initiatives of the College arise from a
sound philosophy of life based on faith in God and the dignity of
all creation.

About the Department
One of the oldest departments of the College, the Department of English today runs
two undergraduate programmes – B.A. English and B.A. English and
Communication Skills, conducted in Shifts 1 and 2 respectively – as well as an M.A.
degree programme in English Literature, available to students of both shifts. The
Department is also one of the seven Departments in College offering a Ph.D
programme. In addition, the Department offers Foundation English courses to all
undergraduate students.
Both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes focus on courses that range
from genre-specific to interdisciplinary, with special emphasis on honing skills
required for various employment sectors. The eclectic mix of courses – both core
and elective – ensures the relevance of the discipline in today's fast-paced,
technology driven world. The Department aims to equip students with critical,
analytical, conceptual and communication skills to give them an edge in various
professions such as teaching, translation, publishing, editing as well as research.
Concept Note
Literary studies today stands at a productive threshold, opening outward into
interdisciplinary conversations with areas hitherto considered non-literary, such as
technology, geography, conflict, and the posthuman condition. Keeping pace with
these emergent areas — and with the thinkers reshaping them — is both a
professional necessity and an intellectual opportunity. This five-day programme is
designed to introduce participants to five such new horizons. Each virtual session
will comprise a 90 minute lecture by an expert in the field followed by a discussion.
The FDP aims to equip participants with conceptual vocabulary in five emergent
areas of literary studies, to familiarise them with key contemporary theorists, and
to bring out concrete ideas for incorporating these frameworks into their own
teaching and research.
