 Foreword
A home is often measured by its
dimensions, materials, or architectural
expression. Yet its true value lies in
less tangible qualities—the comfort it
offers, the memories it holds, and the
relationships it quietly nurtures over
time. The most enduring homes are those
that evolve alongside their inhabitants,
accommodating changing routines while
retaining a familiar sense of belonging.

Architecture, at its best, becomes

a silent participant in everyday
life, shaping experiences without
demanding attention. Taliru emerges
from this understanding. Conceived
for a multigenerational family in
Bengaluru, the residence seeks to create
an environment that feels balanced,
welcoming, and deeply personal.
Through thoughtful planning, climate-
responsive design, and an honest
material palette, the house demonstrates
how architecture can support daily life
with grace, allowing ordinary moments
to unfold with extraordinary richness.

A House That Grows With Life

Named after the tender leaves that appear at the onset of spring, Taliru embodies ideas of renewal,
growth, and continuity. The house was envisioned for a family that values simplicity, togetherness,
and meaningful daily experiences over visual excess. Drawing inspiration from traditional courtyard
homes, the design prioritises light, ventilation, greenery, and spatial openness as active components
of everyday living. Rather than imposing a rigid lifestyle, the home adapts to its occupants,
supporting evolving needs across generations. In doing so, Taliru becomes less a finished object
and more a living framework shaped by the rhythms of family life.

Arrival Through Light and Shadow

The home begins with a carefully orchestrated approach that creates a gradual transition from the
outside world into the calm interior environment. Upon entering, a dramatic triple-height volume
immediately expands the sense of space, creating visual connections across multiple levels of the home.
Light enters from above and shifts throughout the day, animating surfaces and revealing subtle changes
in atmosphere. Rather than serving merely as circulation, the foyer becomes an important spatial anchor
that introduces the architectural language of the house. The contrast between enclosure and openness,
shadow and illumination, transforms arrival into an experience of discovery. It establishes a sense of
calm while offering an early glimpse into the interconnected world that unfolds beyond.

The Social Heart of the Home

At the centre of the home lies a sequence of interconnected spaces that form the social heart of the
home. The living room, dining area, and kitchen are arranged to encourage interaction, allowing
daily life to unfold naturally across shared spaces. This openness reflects the family’s desire for
togetherness, ensuring that conversations continue effortlessly between activities. The living area
balances comfort with climatic responsiveness, incorporating carefully positioned openings and
shaded surfaces that maintain a pleasant indoor environment. The dining space occupies a pivotal
position within this arrangement, becoming the place where family members gather repeatedly
throughout the day.

Framing Everyday Rituals

Some of the most meaningful moments within a home emerge through everyday rituals. The home
acknowledges these experiences by carefully shaping spaces that support reflection, gathering, and
routine. The pooja room occupies a quiet corner where controlled shafts of daylight create an atmosphere
of serenity and contemplation. Its modest scale is enriched by thoughtful material choices and the
gentle play of light across textured surfaces. Elsewhere, transitions between rooms are punctuated by
framed views and moments of pause that encourage awareness of daily movement through the home.
Rather than treating rituals as isolated events, the architecture integrates them into the broader living
experience.

The kitchen is envisioned as a place of participation rather than separation. Openly connected to
the dining area, it enables one to remain engaged with family activities and conversations. Visual
connections to the garden introduce natural light and greenery into the space, enhancing the everyday
experience. The relationship between kitchen and dining area encourages a fluid exchange of activity,
transforming routine tasks into shared experiences. Rather than functioning solely as a utilitarian
workspace, the kitchen becomes an active contributor to the social life of the home. This integration
reflects the broader philosophy of the home, where spaces are designed not only for efficiency but also
to strengthen relationships and encourage meaningful interaction.

The Vertical Commons

Movement through the home is organised around a dynamic vertical core that connects different
levels while fostering visual interaction. The staircase is conceived as more than a circulation element;
it becomes a communal spine that binds the house together. Rising through the central volume, it
reveals changing perspectives and layered relationships between spaces. Timber treads introduce
warmth and tactility, while the bridge connection above reinforces a sense of continuity and motion.
From various points along this journey, occupants remain visually connected to activities occurring
elsewhere within the house. This openness encourages awareness and interaction without
compromising privacy. The vertical commons transforms everyday movement into a rich spatial
experience, ensuring that transitions between floors remain engaging and connected.

Rooms of Individuality
The first floor transitions into a quieter realm dedicated to rest, privacy, and individual expression.
Bedrooms are arranged as personal retreats, each receiving ample daylight, natural ventilation,
and carefully framed views. Thoughtful planning ensures that every room maintains a distinct
identity while remaining connected to the overall spatial framework of the house. The son’s
bedroom incorporates customised display areas that celebrate personal interests and collections,
transforming the room into a reflection of its occupant. Storage, study, and relaxation zones are
integrated seamlessly to support daily routines. The bedrooms avoid excess, instead focusing on
comfort, functionality, and a calm atmosphere.

The Evolving Balcony and the Growing Tree

One of most meaningful features of this home emerged not from a predetermined plan but through
attentive engagement with the site during construction. As a tree on the southern edge of the property
matured, its presence inspired the creation of a balcony adjoining the master bedroom. The balcony
provides opportunities for interaction with the outdoors while benefiting from the shade, privacy, and
cooling effects offered by the tree. Its evolution reflects a design process that remained responsive and
adaptable rather than rigidly fixed. By allowing the architecture to respond to changing site conditions,
the project demonstrates a sensitivity to nature and an appreciation for the unexpected possibilities
that emerge over time.

Crafted Narratives
The home celebrates craftsmanship through details that emerge naturally from the architecture rather
than existing as decorative additions. Throughout the home, handmade interventions enrich everyday
experiences while strengthening connections to local traditions and skilled making. In the living space,
the terracotta filler slab ceiling transforms a structural necessity into a tactile and visually expressive
element, introducing warmth, texture, and depth overhead. Along the staircase, handcrafted wooden
beads inspired by the toy-making heritage of Channapatna create a distinctive railing that brings cultural
memory into daily life. Above the dining area, a composition of broken ceramic tiles arranged around a
skylight captures shifting daylight and turns it into an ever-changing work of art.

The uppermost level of the residence introduces a different dimension to family life. Here, the terrace
becomes an extension of the home, offering opportunities for relaxation, gathering, and reflection
beneath the open sky. A thoughtfully designed seating area encourages informal interaction while
framing views towards the western horizon. The terrace transforms into a place for observing sunsets
and enjoying cooler evening breezes. Through its simplicity and flexibility, the terrace reinforces the idea
that meaningful living often occurs in spaces that blur the boundaries between architecture and nature.

beyond conventional grid layouts,
introducing deliberate variations in
pattern and composition with bricks.

Crafting Climate-Conscious Comfort

Taliru demonstrates how passive strategies can create comfortable living conditions while reducing
dependence on mechanical systems. Orientation informed the placement of openings, walls, and shaded
areas, ensuring a balanced response to sunlight and airflow. Thicker walls on exposed southern facades
help moderate indoor temperatures, while strategically positioned windows encourage natural cross-
ventilation. Open volumes and vertical connections allow warm air to dissipate effectively, improving
thermal performance throughout the house. Skylights introduce daylight deep into the interiors,
reducing the need for artificial illumination during daytime hours. These climate-sensitive measures
are seamlessly integrated into the architectural language, ensuring that sustainability is experienced
not as an added feature but as an intrinsic quality of daily life within the home.

Taliru stands as an exploration of how architecture can quietly enrich everyday life. Beyond its
physical form, the house embodies values of trust, adaptability, togetherness, and connection

flourish, achieving a rare harmony between collective living and private retreat. As light shifts across
surfaces, trees continue to grow, and routines evolve through the years, the home adapts alongside
its inhabitants. Taliru is not designed as a static architectural statement but as a living companion
to family life. In its ability to nurture relationships and support daily rituals, it reveals the enduring
power of thoughtful, human-centred design.
