Grade 6 Mathematics
Core Concept Reference & Summary Notes
Unit 1: Number Sense and Operations
1. Place Value and Decimals
• Grade 6 extends understanding of decimals to the thousandths place and beyond.
• When multiplying decimals, multiply as with whole numbers, then count the total decimal places in the
factors to place the decimal point in the product.
• When dividing decimals, move the decimal point in the divisor to make it a whole number, and move the
decimal point in the dividend the same number of places.
2. Fractions and Mixed Numbers
• Dividing Fractions: To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal (invert the second fraction and
multiply).
a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c = (ad)/(bc)
Unit 2: Ratios, Rates, and Percentages
1. Ratios and Rates
• A Ratio is a comparison of two quantities by division (e.g., 3:2 or 3/2).
• A Unit Rate compares a quantity to one unit of another quantity (e.g., 60 miles per 1 hour).
2. Understanding Percentages
• A percent is a ratio that compares a number to 100. "Percent" means per hundred.
• To find the percent of a number, convert the percent to a decimal or fraction and multiply.
Part = (Percent / 100) × Whole
Unit 3: Expressions and Equations
1. Order of Operations
Evaluate numerical expressions using the standard order of operations:
1. Parentheses and grouping symbols
2. Exponents
3. Multiplication and Division (from left to right)
4. Addition and Subtraction (from left to right)

2. Algebraic Expressions and One-Step Equations
• Variables are letters used to represent unknown numbers (e.g., x, y).
• To solve a one-step equation, isolate the variable using the inverse (opposite) operation.
Equation Type Example Inverse Operation Required Solution
Addition x + 5 = 12 Subtract 5 from both sides x=7
Subtraction y-3=9 Add 3 to both sides y = 12
Multiplication 4g = 20 Divide both sides by 4 g=5
Division z/2=6 Multiply both sides by 2 z = 12
Unit 4: Geometry and Measurement
1. Perimeter, Area, and Volume
Key geometric formulas utilized in Grade 6:
• Area of a Rectangle: Area = length × width
• Area of a Triangle: Area = ½ × base × height
• Volume of a Rectangular Prism: Volume = length × width × height
Unit 5: Statistics and Probability
1. Measures of Center and Variability
• Mean (Average): The sum of the data values divided by the total number of values.
• Median: The middle value when data is ordered from least to greatest.
• Mode: The value that appears most frequently in a data set.
• Range: The difference between the highest and lowest values (measures variability).
