1 As a professional runner, I haven’t escaped despite their age, weight or fitness. The only

over ten hours a week and forgetting to stretch something, they take the week off. This is

flexible, I might not perform so well.
2 As I’m a physiotherapist, I try to follow my own
advice. But it’s easier said than done. Once I
was out of shape but ran a half marathon
anyway. If it had been one of my own clients, I
wouldn’t have let them do it. I ended up
fracturing my foot around the ten-mile mark. If I
hadn’t pulled out, I could have had permanent
injuries and never run again. That would have
been terrible, but it does highlight the importance
of appropriate training before and after an event.
In fact, stretching is probably more beneficial
after a run than before one.
3 I guess I’m not your typical 68-year-old. I rarely
come down with anything, and I put that down to
exercise. I used to be in a few different teams at
one point: rugby, tennis and football. If I’d carried
on like that, I think my marriage would’ve ended.
Fun though it was, my hobbies just took up too
much time. Now I get out for a jog three times a
week, rain or shine. I wish I could say that I don’t
sometimes feel tired or get muscle ache, but
these injuries are mild, and it hasn’t stopped me
from sticking to my routine yet.
4 I started doing gymnastics as a kid and am
flexible as a result of the training I used to do. A
few years ago, I had to go to the hospital after a
fall at a gymnastics competition. The doctor said
I was lucky, but I had to quit high-impact sports.
She said unless I stopped doing this, I could
cause permanent damage. As long as I’m
playing sports, I’m happy, so this was
disappointing. But I had a rethink and took up
swimming. It’s a great way to keep in shape.
