Meaning of Descriptive Adjectives


Descriptive adjectives are words that describe or give more information about a
noun or pronoun.

Examples:
• A beautiful girl
• A tall tree
• A red car
• A happy child

Types of Descriptive Adjectives

1. Adjectives of Size
Examples: big, small, huge, tiny, tall, short

Sentences:
• The elephant is huge.
• She bought a small bag.

2. Adjectives of Colour
Examples: red, blue, green, black, white

Sentences:
• I have a blue pen.
• The farmer owns a black cow.

3. Adjectives of Shape
Examples: round, square, flat, oval

Sentences:
• The table is round.
• She drew an oval shape.

4. Adjectives of Quality
Examples: kind, clever, honest, beautiful, brave
Sentences:
• Mary is a clever pupil.
• The soldier was brave.

5. Adjectives of Number
Examples: one, two, many, few, several

Sentences:
• I have three books.
• Few learners arrived early.

Position of Descriptive Adjectives

1. Before the noun


• A beautiful dress
• A large house

2. After linking verbs


• The food is delicious.
• The children are happy.

Comparison of Adjectives

Positive Degree:
• tall
• beautiful

Comparative Degree:
• taller
• more beautiful

Examples:
• John is taller than James.
• This story is more interesting than the other one.

Superlative Degree:
• tallest
• most beautiful

Examples:
• Mount Kenya is the tallest mountain in Kenya.
• She is the most hardworking student.

Uses of Descriptive Adjectives
