Module 4 Merged

The document outlines two engineering problems related to chemical process engineering involving distillation and air-conditioning systems. It provides detailed information about flow rates, compositions, and calculations needed to determine moisture removal, recycle ratios, and mass balances in mixing units. The problems require the application of linear models and matrix methods for solving the equations derived from the given data.

1 A spent acid solution from a nitration plant contains 40% H 2SO4, 10% HNO3, and 50%
H2O by mass. It is fed to a distillation column at the rate of 1000 kg/h to separate into three
fractions - A, B, and C. 94% of HNO3 in the feed is recovered in fraction A, while 6% is
recovered in fraction B. 80% of water in the feed is recovered in fraction B, and 12% is
recovered in fraction A. 95% of H2SO4 is recovered in fraction C, and 4% is recovered in
fraction B. Calculate flow rates of three fractions using the linear model method.

2 An air-conditioning plant is employed to maintain a 27 °C dry bulb (DB) temperature and

50% relative humidity in an auditorium. The airflow rate to the auditorium is measured at
5.806 m3/s at 17 °C DB and 83.5% RH. The auditorium's effluent air is partially recycled
and mixed with incoming fresh air for economic reasons. The fresh ambient air is fed at
the rate of 1.25 m3/s at 35 °C DB and 70% RH. The mixed air is found to have 29.5 °C DB
and 54% RH and is passed through the air-conditioning plant to make it suitable for feeding
to the auditorium. For all practical purposes, the total pressure can be assumed constant at
101.3 kPa (a).

(a) Calculate the moisture removed in the air-conditioning plant. (Ans: 97 kg/h)
(b) Calculate the moisture added in the auditorium. (Ans: 28 kg/h)
(c) Calculate the recycle ratio as moles of air recycled per mole of fresh ambient air
input. (Ans: 3.96)
(d) Calculate the flow rate of purge stream. (Ans: 48 mol/s)

1 A continuous mixing unit operates at steady state. Three liquid streams containing a solute
A are fed into the mixer, and one outlet stream is withdrawn.
 Stream 1: 120 kg/h containing 25 wt% A
 Stream 2: 80 kg/h containing 40 wt% A
 Stream 3: Flow rate 𝐹3 kg/h containing 10 wt% A
The outlet stream has:
 Total flow rate = 300 kg/h
 Composition = 𝑥(wt fraction of A)

(a) Write the total mass balance and component (A) balance equations.
(b) Rearrange the equations into a system of linear equations in terms of suitable
unknowns.
(c) Solve the system using the matrix method to determine the unknowns.

 Mixer 1:
o Feed 1: 200 kg/h, 10 wt% A
o Feed 2: Unknown 𝐹2 , 50 wt% A
o Output: 𝐹3
 Mixer 2:
o Receives 𝐹3
o Additional feed: 100 kg/h, 30 wt% A
o Final output: 400 kg/h, composition 𝑥

(a) Write total and component balances for both mixers

(b) Develop three independent equations
(c) Solve using the matrix method for 𝐹2 , 𝐹3 , 𝑥
